Dear Sirs,
I would appreciate your expertise in resolving my issue.

I have Dell laptop running Win XP Pro SP2. I am not able to run any antivirus (antivir, avg) or registry scanners in normal log in. Antivir tries to run for 5 seconds and stops with 0 files scanned and 0 infections found. Registry scanner (RegistryBooster 2) starts and runs without actually scanning anything. Both programs run OK in safe mode.
Also unable to go anywhere on line except google.com. None of the links work under search results (same in safe mode).
I was able to run Spybot and SuperantiSpyware but nothing was found durring scans.

Also computer is very slow.

I know my pc is compromised and I am sure you guys will resolve my problem.

Thanks in advance :wavey:

Here is my HJT log file:

Hello skripun and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren

That came up as clean as a whistle. Let 's dig a bit deeper.

A. Please provide a list of uninstallable programs.

To Provide a List of Installed Programs
  • Run HijackThis.
  • Click Config>>Miscellaneous Tools>>Open Uninstall Manager>>Save List
  • Save list to Desktop
  • Copy the Notepad list and Paste it into this thread.

B. Let us see if an on line scanner will work.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner (Use Internet Explorer as your Browser)

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE YO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Next Click on Free Virus Scanner, then Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information into your next post.
Regards

No bugs apparent.

I would also UNINSTALL Ad-Aware 2007 for now. They are having some problems with it.

Were you aware that you had a program on your machine that allows it to be controlled at a distance by a program called TightVNC? The reason I am asking you this is because this does not appear to be a malware problem but a configuration problem and there exists the possibility that permissions are being denied from an outside source. I'm just stating that theret is a possibility. Then it becomes a corporate security issue that must be dealt with within your corporation by the proper authority.

You are able to reach other sites inasmuch as you reached the Kaspersky AV site.

I am able to reach other sites with IE6 no problem. I will look into configuration issues. Tight VNC is used for remote desktop within the company. Again, thanks for all your help. Trevuren, You seem to know what is going on with spyware, maleware etc... What would you reccomend or where to go online to learn more about how to actually detect and eradicate all that at "grass roots level". I would certanly like to learn how to read HJT or Combofix log files and understand and do something about it without relying on antispyware soft? Regards, Skripun :wavey:

I never installed IE7 on my machine because everything went buggy. Let me rephrase that...I installed it, then uninstalled it.

As far as learning about malware, there are several schools on line, Tom Coyote is one of them, where you can learn to combat malware. This is really more for those who intend to help in Forums like myself. You can find other schools at BleepingComputer (Some very good user tutorials), Malware Removal University, GeekstoGo, Spywareinfo, CastleCops etc....

Here are a few tips:

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren
