Hi, I am new to all of this but basically my PC is running extremely slow and will freeze or crash a lot.and my internet is taking a long time to connect to home page etc. I am currently running Norton 360 and scans have come up clean. I also have uniblue power suit as well however although the scans have helped a little they really haven't done much at all to speed anythinng up. What I would really like to know is how to stop unessisary proccesses and programs running on start up and if I have any spy/malware or infections also if there is anything in these logs i don't need and can remove from the system? I have followed your steps and have posted my logs below.

Thanks

Hi total_amateur,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

The following step will remove all (what I believe to be) non-essential items.
  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

Log looks good :D

Windows SP3 has been out for awhile now. It's important that you get your operating system up-to-date.

Using Internet Explorer go to Windows Updates. Please install all critical updates.

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
I cannot perform the SP3 Update? the web site from your link keeps telling me The following; [Error number: 0x80248011]

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
Refresh the page.
In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to the Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
Close and then re-open Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer (Add-ons Disabled) mode only prevents the use of ActiveX controls, including those used by the Microsoft Update website. To get updates using this browser mode, you need to turn on Automatic Updates on your computer or visit the Windows Update website.

If these steps don’t work, try visiting the site later or using the resources provided below.

I tried all the steps that they recommended but still nothing? do you have any suggestions? I don't think my updates have been working for a while now. could it be my norton360 ?
total_amateur,

It could be a variety of things. Let's try this:

We need to repair some of windows' internal registration settings
  • Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:
  • Extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.
  • Press the green double checkmark box (Looks like this: [external image: Posted Image])
  • UNcheck "Empty Temp Folders", as well as "Adjust Time/Date" in the prep section.
  • Press the GO button in the bottom of the window.
  • Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix

Reboot your computer.

Then try updating.
total_amateur, 1. Click Start, Run, type: inetcpl.cpl and press Enter. 2. Select the General tab, and in the Temporary Internet files window, click Delete Cookies, and click OK. 3.
