Hello Xcalibur and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

First download AVG AntiSpyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG AntiSpyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete, run AVG AntiSpyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG AntiSpyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG AntiSpyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Launch AVG AntiSpyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG AntiSpyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG AntiSpyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the report scan along with a fresh HJT log for review.
Ok done but even though I had generate reports automaticaly selected and only if threats found unchecked it did not generate a report for me to save. Here are the threats it found.

c:\System Volume Information\_restore{A0B4B813-D5CB-466F-8ADD-D0CDCB09AE92}\RP132\A0022571.DLL INFECTED WITH Adware.BHO

This may get complicated. Those rootkit files are usually removed by AVG AS but apparently the tool did not work this time.

A. I can't get information on the following file. Before submitting it for analysis, do you know anything about this program:

c:\program files\gates\salestraksync\GateshashSyncSvs.exe

B. Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Regards,

Trevuren
That file is ok it has to do with a program I use for work. I will post the logs when I am done running the programs.

A. There is a file in your log of which I am unsure. For that reason, I need you to submit it to Jotti's for analysis.

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

C:\WINDOWS\jautoexp.dat

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

B. Please disable AVG AntiSpyware by opening the program and on the Status page - beside "Resident Shield" click on "change status" so that it says "inactive" for it may interfere with our HJT fix.
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when all our work is finished.

C. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {49E0E0F0-5C30-11D4-945D-000000000000} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iehelper3.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6B690ACD-9479-4C41-8A2D-D6083F650E81} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPDirecter.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACNotify - ACNotify.dll (file missing)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

D. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\wiainst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\bthservsdp.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\4LMZH.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\hpprintspool.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\7NYV3.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\CMD.EXE

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpff4

3. Save the above as ComboFix-Do.txt

4. Then drag the ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

E. Please run AVG AS again and tell me if those files still appear and what their full paths are.

Regards,

Trevuren
OK Trevuren that file checked out as ok.

AVG AS did not find those files again it did find 3 tracking cookies which were deleted.
Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Trevuren
Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. First, a little housecleaning to remove some of the tools that we have been using:
  • Please download Toolmop.zip that I have provided as an attachment to this post.
  • Download the file to your desktop
  • Open the zipped file by clicking on it
  • Extract the enclosed file Toolmop.bat to your desktop.
  • Click on Toolmop.bat to run the file.
  • Respond to all prompts.
  • When the tool has finished its work, it should auto-destruct.
  • Now delete Toolmop.zip from your desktop.

2. Please DELETE Malicious Items from the AVG AntiSpyware Quarantine

A. Open AVG AntiSpyware by double clicking its icon located in the System Tray down by the clock.

B. Click on "Infections" on the AVG AntiSpyware Toolbar, then select the "Quarantine Tab"

C. Choose "Select All" at the bottom of the AVG AntiSpyware window, then click on the "Remove Finally" button and EXIT the program.

3. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

4. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren
Thanks Trevuren, I tried to do the toolmop.zip but it says I do not have access. Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information. The error returned was: Sorry, but you do not have permission to use this feature. If you are not logged in, you may do so using the form below if available. I am logged in but can not access it. I have done the other steps to clean up what I can.
We will accomplish the same thing by going the following:

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please click on CleanUp and the tool will self destruct once it has finished its job.
