My son went to a porn site. A pop-up told him there are tracks of where you have been. He clicked on the pop-up thinking this will fix it. Fix is the wrong word for what it did.

My desktop is hijacked. The icons are there but the whole desk area is a button. IE opens every few minutes to sites selling fixes for the issues they planted. My home page is hijacked to the sites as well. I have found a few of the programs but can't delete or uninstall them. A couple of the programs are "Eraser, Privacy Protector, Online Security World, Error Cleaner, Drive Cleaner"

System restore will not let me do a roll back.

A copy of HJT log file included.

Please help me get my computer back!

ADMIN

Thanks for your response. To the best of my knowledge i have done as you asked.

Desk top is still hijacked. It is red and acts as a hyper link to – http://aboutyourprivacy.com/phandler.php
I see by the hijack scan my home page is still going to an add-link.

AVG found a lot of items it was able to fix all it found. Log for AVG & HJT below. I saw somewhere on this board you don't want them as attachments. Hope i'm right.

I had run House Call, Panda, F-Secure, Lava soft. I can't even remember all the scans in the last several days. AVG beat them all by a long shot.

ADMIN,
The home page gomyron was a hijack. I had removed it with the fix button and by going to IE internet options. As soon as i would change it IE would revert back. It now seems to be staying fixed.

The most obvious issue at present is my desk top is still in the mode i mentioned earlier.
The whole screen is red. It should be happy hill. That is what the desk top is until XP is totally up. My icons are there but the desk top is a big button the icons float on. If i am not very careful when clicking an icon IE opens to http://aboutyourprivacy.com/phandler.php which is a blind link now. Before the last fixes it would link to sites selling virus cleaners.
So i have IE back working. But this deal with the desk top has not been picked up by any of the scans for Malware.

Thanks again for all your help.

What anti-virus program are you using? 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. 3. Select Restore Defaults 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop. then click the web tab, then under the web pages to display on your desktop if it has "security" you uncheck this and delete Let me know if that fixed the desktop.
I am using F-secure resident. But run House Call about once a week. I thought it was good until it couldn't find any of the issues that AVG found. I think your having me run ATF helped stop the reinfections i seemed to be having the last few days. I used AVG for a good while. A couple of years back i had issues that between it and spy sweeper would lock the computer up. That did in fact fix the desk top. The security was checked that seems to have all my issues resolved. What virus protection do you suggest? Firewall? Would you just run AVG on weekly basis? Thanks so much for your help.
Your F-secure should be OK. I had noticed a McAfee service running, so I wanted to be sure before removing it

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find (mcupdmgr.exe)
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the
Services utility.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O23 - Service: McAfee SecurityCenter Update Manager (mcupdmgr.exe) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdmgr.exe (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on 6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed
Sun Java Test
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Reboot and describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
ADMIN, I went to run and followed your instructions. I could not find the entry (mcupdmgr.exe) only McAfee Security Center. I did check the tab Service = Stopped. so i ran HJT checked the 023- service: McAfee———- and then fix. I also did an uninstall on two old Java installs then rebooted and installed then tested the JRE 6u1. Everything is working just as it should. Thanks to you i have my computer back.
You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
