[tabasco]

My computer is a mess. I tried to install a video codec or something and I'm pretty sure it was a virus My desktop background is now red with a message saying I need to download pc protection. I get pop ups every 5 minutes saying i have spyware or some random internet site from credit card offers to porn sites. It changed my internet home page, added buttons to the internet toolbar, added desktop icons for some spyware thing. Please help me get rid of this thing!

Edit: Oh yeah. I tried to fix it myself and I erased some stuff with Hijack but I don't what what the heck I'm doing and now when I start my computer the desktop doesn't show up unless I open it with the task manager. Maybe you could help me with that too. Thanks.

[Noviciate]

Run HJT and click on View the list of backups.
Select them all using the check boxes and then click on Restore.
Reboot the PC and then let me have a fresh HJT log.

Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.

• Click Open Uninstall Manager...
• Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
• Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

When I click Open Uninstall Manager and try to save the uninstall list it just disappears and doesn't give me an option to save it to the desktop. I tried several times but it does the same thing every time. I searched my computer for uninstall_list.txt in case it saved somewhere else but it didn't find anything. I don't know what to do.

I'm still having trouble getting the uninstall log to save. It's doing the same thing as before.

As far as my computer is behaving, I haven't had one of the spyware warning popups since running combofix so that's good Edit: Ok I lied, I am still getting them My desktop background is now blue with a yellow rectangle that says I have spyware. And my screensaver is a bunch of bugs crawling on the screen. But it's definitely improved some since running combofix.

I really appreciate what you guys are doing here to help.

1) Download SmitfraudFix.exe by S!Ri from here and save it to your Desktop.

If you already have a copy, open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Press "4" and then <ENTER> to check for updates.
Don't forget to allow SmiUpdate.exe access through your firewall.
Once it has updated, or if there are no updates available, continue with the scan, "option 1", below.

2) Double click SmitfraudFix.exe - this will open a Command Window and also create the SmitfraudFix folder on your Desktop. Once you have read the information, "press any key to continue..."
Press "1" and then <ENTER> to start the search process.
When the search has completed, a text file, rapport.txt, will open with the results in - Copy and paste this report into your next reply.

A copy of the report can be found in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
For most, this file can be found by double-clicking My Computer and then Local Disk (C:)

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Please Note: Some security programs will incorrectly identify this tool as potentially or actually malicious due to some of it's components. Although these files can be used maliciously, they are an integral part of the fix and I recommend you tell your scanner to mind it's own business this time.

I've noticed that after I run combofix everything seems to be pretty normal for about 20 minutes or so. The only bad stuff I still notice is my internet home page is still different and I get an occasional internet popup. Then after about 20 minutes all the bad stuff comes back. My desktop background changes, all the constant popups saying I have spyware come back, the icons on my desktop for the spyware remover come back, everything. It's like it's alive in there somewhere!

I also thought you should know that I downloaded AVG antispyware yesterday. It seems like McAfee isn't finding anything. If I shouldn't have done that let me know and I can remove it. I don't see it in your log, but I do see AVG 8.0 anti-virus - are you sure that you downloaded the anti-spyware app? If you do have AVG AV, then you need to read on:
The choice of security programs is yours to make, but the golden rule is one firewall and one antivirus program on one computer - running two or more of either could cause conflictions giving less, not more, protection.
As you appear to have AVG AV and McAfee, you need to pick one of each and uninstall the other. If you get rid of McAfee and need a new firewall, then the following are free:

It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download them all to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

Run through the following which will offer a second opinion of things, and also leave you with a free stand-alone scanner to help keep your PC clean in the future:

You will need to make a copy of these instructions because you have to disconnect from the internet to complete the fix. Either print them out or copy and paste them into Notepad.

Preparation

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• Ensure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
• Once the little window has closed, the program is up to date and this bit is done.

2) You will need to set Windows to show All Hidden Files and Folders.
Instructions can be found here.
** These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after fixing your computer. **

3) Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable for the duration of the fix.

Removal

1) Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

O24 - Desktop Component 1: Privacy Protection - file:///C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.htm

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked

2) Run MBAM - either via the shortcut on your Desktop or Start > All Programs.

• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
• When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
• If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

3) Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

• If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
• Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
• Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
• Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
• Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
• Login on your usual account.

4) Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all the files that you find there.

5) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp and delete all the files that you find there.
Do this for all Usernames.

6) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.

For I.E. 6 - under Temporary Internet files, click on Delete Files...
Check the box to the left of 'Delete all offline content' and then click on OK.

For I.E. 7 - under Browsing History, click delete...
Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files...

7) Remove any/all of the following files/folders that you can find:

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\filetogo.bye
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Double click on Local Disc (C:)
Double click on the Windows folder,

8) Boot into Normal Mode.

Post a new HJT log, the MBAM log AND a description of how your PC is running.

My computer seems to be back to normal! The internet seems to be slower than normal but it could be all in my head. One thing I noticed is every now and then the AVG antivirus pops up saying it found a trojan.zlob or something like that. I'm a newb when it comes to this stuff but I'm afraid that it's blocking whatever it is that starts all the popups and stuff so I'm afraid to uninstall AVG. Of course I could be completely wrong since I don't know what I'm talking about. Any suggestions?
