The speakers do not work and neither do headphones when I plug them in. The sound is also all on. I have no idea what it could be.

did you successfully resolve your Sony RootKit issue back from December/January?
_____________
Do you have a Speaker Icon in the right hand portion of your TaskBar Tray, down by your clock?
Double-Click on it to make sure that settings are not set to MUTE.
___________
Check in your Device Manager for any yellow or red warnings, particularly associated with MultiMedia and/or Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
________
Are there any sounds that play.
For instance, online clips play, but music and gaming CD's do not?
xcspiderweb
Yes I did, unless somehow I got it again but I don't think so.
Doug
And about the other questions…..???

The settings are not on mute, there are no yellow or red warnings and absolutely no sound plays.

This is a very good and comprehensive trouble-shooting guide.
I recommend you read and follow it through as a comprehensive process, rather than you and I checking out our best random guesses.
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000208.htm
Please keep us posted with your progress and let us know what ultimately worked for you if the linked protocol works.
If not, we'll get back to a bit more research.
Best Regards

None of those methods do not seem to work. I don't know if this is related but when I tried to test the sound I opened itunes and any song i tried playing would not play and was stuck at 00:00

Let's have an overview of that machine's setup and functioning.
GoTo:
http://www.pcpitstop.com
Run - Full Tests — Then post the TechExpress link address back here into this thread.
You'll have to register and accept an ActiveX to Run the Full Tests. (both are Free and Safe)

You have several Media players/converters
Your sound system may have been set to default with one of them.
When this happens, "all" audio files (mpg, wma, etc.) become "associated" with that player, and any attempts to play audio via some other player will fail because the "file types" are not associated with that player.
Uninstall as many of of your "media applications" as you are able – especially the ones you may no longer be using.
Especially Uninstall - ViewPoint Media Player and its managing tool ViewPoint Media Manager
Decide which Media Player you are going to be using (primarily) and go into the application settings to make it your Default Player, with all the "file types" "associated" with that chosen application.
_________
You have a fine machine, but also a ton of "junk files" clogging your Hard Drive
— Run you Ccleaner utility to get rid of most of those junk files.
Your Hard Drive also seriously needs to be Defragged.
— Run your Disk Defragmenter (3) three times in a row to get a good Defrag
___________
You have too many applications Running Active from StartUp File
— Disable as many of the items listed with Purple and Gray background in your Pit Test - Windows Results page - as you can.
__________
You are using AOL Security?
But also have Norton Updater?
If you are no longer running Norton Securities, uninstall Norton/symantec Updater
____________
Since you have 6464 MB (8%) of Drive C:\ reserved for System Restore, you don't need any reserved for System Restore on Drive D:\ Us the "slider" to set System Restore to 0% on Drive D:\
____________
You don't need both Webroot Spysweeper and Spyware Guard running active on your machine at the same time.
I favor Webroot Spysweeper (but it's your choice) - disable one or the other.
__________
Are you also having difficulty with slow browsing of the internet?
If not, OK.
If so, you may be having a conflict between the AOL security software and your Zone Alarm
_________
Follow the other Pit Test Recommendations
Then Run another Pit Test and post its fresh TechExpress Link address
_________
The above may not completely resolve your sound problem, but will generally help your machine.
We can take the next steps from that point.

Hi xcspiderweb,
Let's have another look at your Device Manager.
Your problem suggests that the Audio drivers are either corrupted or not fully installed.
Please go to Device Manager.
Is there a listed item labeled "Other"?
Please Expand the listed item labeled "Sound, video and game controllers"
Copy down the items listed under "Sound, video and game controllers and include them in your next reply.
Or take a screen shot of your Device Manager as I have in the example below.
Notice in my example that there is an item labeled "Other" and that there is (1) one item under it in the expanded list.
Notice that there are (8) eight items under the "Sound, video and game controllers" expanded list.
(Not all of those items are the Sound Card Drivers (only the Creative SB Live items) but all of them are important to list in your reply if they exist in your Device Manager.) (Yours should include "SoundMax")

Post back with either a screen shot or a typed list from "Others" and from "Sound, video and game controllers"
Best Regards
