Hello All,
I'm past due for a check-up. My computer is running terrible. It got me through school though…barely. My hijack this log is below. Would a kind soul mind helping me through this?
Thank you,
Tom.

Thrith,

Welcome back, nothing real bad on your system I can see. But you want to remove this program.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint <– uninstall anything to do with Viewpoint.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Post a new HJT log as its been awhile since your original post.
Hello Ken,
Thanks. I uninstalled a viewpoint manager and viewpoint media player. This is my new Hijack this log. My computer seems to shut itself down, when it is idle for a long period of time. In the past the screen saver would usually pop up. Do you have any ideas why it would do that.

Good Morning,

Viewpoint is at this time not a malicious program but it installs without your knowledge or consent and I have read that its possible in the future that it may contain spyware. Its still running on your system as a service.

Remove this entry with HJT
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Then delete the entire folder
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Is this computer a laptop?
Go to Start> Control Panel > and in classic view go to Power Options, and let me know how its set.
Hi Ken,

I ran HJT, but the below entry was not there. I'm quessing because I uninstalled it before hand.
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Yes, this is a laptop and the settings are:

Plugged in Running on batteries
Turn off monitor: Never Never
Turn off hard disk: Never After 30 mins.
System standby After 25 mins After 1 hour
System hybernates Never never

My laptop has always shutdown real quick when I've ran just on batteries. Is it because the battery is bad or because of these settings? I've heard some types of batteries will no longer work if they are on a continuous charge; is that true?

Thanks so much Ken.
Tom
This will save battery life.

Plugged in Running on batteries

Turn off monitor: Never Never <–After 30 min or an Hour
Turn off hard disk: Never After 30 mins. <– This is fine, if you use you laptop all day you can increase this amount
System standby After 25 mins After 1 hour <– Never been a big fan of this
System hybernates Never never <– This on some systems will not wake up so I suggest never using it.

Its possible that you are having battery problems if there getting old. Learned from a good friend of mine last week, never buy after market batteries, always get them from the manufacturer of your system.

As far as a continues charge, I would go to your manufacturers website and look for the FAQ about that, all systems are different and they would be more in tune to advise you on that issue.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
