G'day

I'm new to computers so apologies upfront for probably being a bit slow. I'm usuing IE6 and it has recently starting redirecting me from time to time. For example, when trying to access www.ninemsn.com.au, the bar at the bottom of IE says Searching for www.ninemsn.com.au and then changes to Searching for autosearch.msn… and then Searching for www.www.ninemsn.com.au.org. IE then says either page cannot be found or I end up at http://service.convio.net/notfound.html.

I have tried clearing my cookies, files and history using Internet Options which seems to temporarily fix things, but the problem starts again soon after. I have also restoried internet option default and reset web settings all to no avail. I have run both SpybotSD and a full scan on Norton Intermet Security - both did not find anything.

Here is my HijackThis log - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text that will open (report.txt) Please save this file, you'll need to post it with a new HijackThis log.

Next:

Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns <– Note the space between g /f. It needs to be there.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Hi - thanks for responding.

I have followed the instructions (including downloading ATF Cleaner twice - was this intended?) and my Fixwareout report and HijakThis logs are below.

I'm still having the same problems as outlined in my original post (I sometimes also get redirected to http://www.noadware.net/?hop=htttpp. Since then I have also downloaded Firefox (and some Spyware programs) and a similar problems occurs - ie sometimes it will download a page and at other times the same page will not dowload.

One other thing that I have not mentioned yet (I don't know whether it is relevant) is that I have never been able to access Google (but I can access Yahoo and other sites, subject to the problem outlined above) from a computer using my home internet serivce provider (ISP) - even when my computer was brand new about 2 months ago - could it be that the problem is with the ISP?

Finally, I find accessing this site, and a few others extremely slow - ie it takes a few minute to download, whereas others are very quick (normal speed).

Thanks again for your help.

It could be your ISP.
I have seen some that can only get to certain sites, if using Yahoo, by using Yahoo's search engine.

I'm not seeing much in your log.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Fix the first one unless you want that to be your start page.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.aapt.net.au/
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete this File if listed:
C:\ALCMTR.EXE

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Before I received your reply, I contacted my ISP and they suggested that I connect my modem directly to my computer, rather than via my wirelessNetgear router. Doing so seems to have resolved the problems. Without the router I can now access Google and I don't seem to be getting any more redirects or pages not found. But my router does not seem to be configured to be blocking any sites…

Anyway, I have followed your instructions, and here is the new log:

Your log looks good.

My guess is a firewall issue as most routers have a built-in firewall. If Symantec / Windows firewall is also active, that can cause issues.

You can post for help in Other Computer Problems and see if one of the OCP Techs have the answer. I'd post the below quote.

HJT log is clean. http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Internet_Redirects_t79721.html
I contacted my ISP and they suggested that I connect my modem directly to my computer, rather than via my wirelessNetgear router. Doing so seems to have resolved the problems. Without the router I can now access Google and I don't seem to be getting any more redirects or pages not found. But my router does not seem to be configured to be blocking any sites…

Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance.
