I hope someone can help with this problem.

Periodically my browser will alter a url request and take me to an unwanted web site or to the site not found error message.

It is consistant in redirecting with some of my favorites whether clicked on as favorties or manually entered. For example www.hypnosis.com will always give me an error message. But if entered on another computer the site is up and running just fine.

Other requests will sometimes be redirected to a google search, or some other web site.

This does not happen very often, but is certainly annoying.

AVG detects nothing.

I used win patrol to remove all my internet helpers.

No alteration of symptoms.

here is my hijack this log.

thanks,

Hi carsonlp,

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
  • Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish
  • The fix will begin, follow the prompts
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer, please do so
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load, this is normal
  • Once the desktop loads a file will open called report.txt, post the contents of this in your next response
  • Then click Start->Control Panel->Network Connections
  • Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection (or Dial-up Connection if you are using dial-up) and select Properties
  • Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and press the Properties button
  • Select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically and then click OK twice
Then check to see if you have internet access. If it appears you have lost access, please follow these steps in Olive:
  • Select Start->Control Panel->Network Connections
  • Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection (or Dial-up Connection if you are using dial-up) and select Properties
  • Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and press the Properties button
  • Select the radio button that says Use the following DNS server addresses:
  • Then enter the following IP addresses into the Preferred and Alternate IP address boxes: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
  • Then click OK twice

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post the report.txt output and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Here are the reports you requested.

When I responded to a prompt I lost the report.txt file and had to run fixware a second time after I had run Deckard's System Scanner to re-obtain it.

I hope that isnt an inconvenience.

For what it is worth, I can now access web sites properly, something in what the two programs did apparently resolved the problem.

Thoughts or comments appreciated.

thank you,

Hi carsonlp,

For what it is worth, I can now access web sites properly, something in what the two programs did apparently resolved the problem.

Yes it appears the main issue has been dealt with, but there is some further tidying up and checking we should do:

You have Soulseek, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Soulseek via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.

Next, fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner
Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {E9173ECA-1F4F-41ed-AF1F-8F723DFE3458} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {E9173ECA-1F4F-41ed-AF1F-8F723DFE3458} - (no file) (HKCU)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Copy/paste the following quote box into Notepad. Before starting select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.

sc stop nsysaudm
sc delete nsysaudm

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. A black window should open and close - this is normal.

Now reboot your computer

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following file (if present):

Hi carsonlp,

That all looks good and I think your machine is now clean of malware :) some important final steps:

You should now delete dss.exe and FixWareout.exe from your Desktop, also delete these folders:
C:\fixwareout
C:\Deckard

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you also install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this will protect you from a wider range of malware and also that it will protect you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s…re/default.mspx

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Comodo and Zone Alarm:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
http://www.zonelabs.com/
A tutorial on firewalls to help you get started:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.
