Thanks.

CommonName was listed in Add/Remove programs but when I tried to delete it a box popped up saying program may have already been deleted so I just deleted the entry from Add/Rem.

Fixed the line in HJT.

Could not find the C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~2\ADDRES~1\ folder and could not find the winnet.exe file in a search.

DID find 2 winnet.ini files: One in C:\windows\system and one in C:\windows\system32. Didn't touch them.

Will now go do the rootkit searches.
OK,

Sorry for the little delay in getting back to you.

I missed this one and it's part of that commomname toolbar. You can have HJT fix this.

O11 - Options group: [CommonName] CommonName

Let me do a little more research on that Rootkit Revealer log and I'll get back to you.

Can you post a fresh HJT log also after fixing that item.

Thanks,
Dave
Thanks,

Got rid of CommonName.

I missed a few items again. I apologize, things have been crazy at work and I'm rushing too much…need to slow down.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O8 - Extra context menu item: Add A Page Note - C:\Program Files\CommonName\AddressBar\createnote.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Bookmark This Page - C:\Program Files\CommonName\AddressBar\createbookmark.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Email This Link - C:\Program Files\CommonName\AddressBar\emaillink.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Search using CommonName - C:\Program Files\CommonName\AddressBar\navigate.htm

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following folder if present:

C:\Program Files\CommonName

Are you still having issues with the McAfee security program? If you still have the disk(s) for it I would suggest uninstalling it completely and do a re-install. It could be that McAfee install went bad causing that system process to run away.

Let me know how you make out.

Dave
Thanks Dave,

No worry….take your time.

Fixed the entries in HJT. Did not see the file in C:\Program Files.

The McAfee thing is a renewal issue - will fix.

The PC is running better so progress is being made. The only issue that still concerns me is the CPU still constanly at 100% and won't idle down even if I'm not doing anything and there are no open windows.

I checked another of our computers and even with windows open it was idled down.

Tempted to completely uninstall McAfee. Have had McAfee do strange things on other PC's in the past. But……if you see any further infections I'd like to eliminate those first.
Thanks.
I'm seeing anything else malicious in your HJT log but let's try running another tool:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
Thanks,

Is automatic updates for Windows turned on? If so I would like to have you turn it off and then check that process. To do that click Start–>Control Panel–>Security Center–>Automatic Updates Link–>Select "Turn off automatic updates". Reboot and check your processes. Let me know how you made out. Dave
Sorry for the delay Dave.

Turned off Auto updates. No change.
Be advised though - the comp is running much better than when we started!
I'm going to send one last HJT Log for you to check.
If it looks ok then we'll just close this topic and see how things work out.
FYI - daughter has been on here recently using AOL IM, Myspace and some tunes site - just in case you see something bad that's new!

Hi Techmut,

Glad to hear things are running better.

I'm not seeing anything malicious in the most recent log you posted.

I recommend the following to prevent re-infection:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

And in addition to the current protection in place you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Securing_PC_Af…&pid=257163

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Dave
