Hello techmut,

One other thing. If I open Task Manager, CPU Usage is a constant 100% all the time.
In the Processes tab it shows: Image Name: System; User Name: SYSTEM constantly using 90 - 98 CPU.
Don't know if this is significant or not.

Malware is still quite present, so this is not a surprise.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Please reverse this process once the fix is complete.

NOTE: Items marked in green are optional to remove. They are related to the Optimum Toolbar which may technically not be Malware is questionable. A safer alternative would be the Google Toolbar. It is up to you if you this toolbar or not.
Item marked in red are also optional and related to Weatherbug. Here is some info. on this item:
WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies (weatherbugmedia.com). There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is ‘spyware’, and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers. However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. This makes it ‘unsolicited’, and since it is installed to raise money for its creators through the built-in ads it is certainly ‘commercial’. So it does meet the definition for ‘parasite’: unsolicited commercial software. It is nonetheless listed as a borderline case because it is not overtly harmful and many people do install it deliberately. WeatherBug bundles the MySearch parasite in its standalone distribution and has in the past, installed Gator and SVAPlayer.

I recommend that you uninstall WeatherBugand choose one of these alternatives:
Weather Pulse
Weather Watcher
or
Get mozilla Firefox and then get FORECASTFOX!!!
or check the weather at these websites:
Weather Street: US Weather
Intellicast
To uninstall WeatherBug:
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight WeatherBug, click Remove.
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: [external image: Posted Image]
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    [external image: Posted Image]
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Post a new HJT log and let me know how things are running now.

Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave,

Weatherbug wasn't listed in add/remv progms. Did show up in HJT log.
Did not see the two files in c:\windows\system32.

CPU still screaming at 100%.
After reboot McAfee said "not protected", when I tried fixing in Security Center it now tells me to reinstall Security Center.
Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Apparently doesn't like Kaspersky: I may be doing something wrong but……….. When I click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner button to download it the window opens with requirements, benefits and privacy statement and I hit Accept, brings me to the Scanner window that asks if I will allow install of activeX, click on that and the Kaspersky window with the privacy statement opens again & the Scanner window disappears, but there is now no button to accept or decline and nothing further happens.
OK not sure what is going on with Kaspersky. Do you have any other versions installed? If so you would need to uninstall using Add or Remove Programs.

If that doesn't work we can try another scanner:

TrendMicro™ HouseCall Java Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
Post any details about the scan in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.
Ok……the Kaspersky mystery……….. the window that had no accept button…had to set the zoom to 75% to see it.

CPU still constantly at 100%.

Just wondering about the optimumonline files…do you think they were causing a problem?

I didn't think they were a big problem and had them as optional in my initial fix. We can certainly restore those items with HJT if you wish. Let me know.

CPU still constantly at 100%.

Can you tell me what process(s) is taking up the CPU cycles?

This item just came up in your last log. It is related to the CommonName Toolbar which is considered spyware. It hasn't been in any of your other logs. Did you just download this toolbar or know how and why this is just showing up now?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winnet] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~2\ADDRES~1\winnet.exe

I don't think it is causing your issue with CPU at 100%.

—————————————————————-

Let's try this. Rename HijackThis to something else, like findvundo.exe, or anything you like. Just make sure you keep the .exe part. And post a new log. Sometimes Vundo files will hide from HJT and show up when you rename it. I know we ran the Vundo fix earlier but I've recently seen some pretty stubborn infections of this type that the tool is not able to completely remove by itself. Or it needs to be run multiple times. Let's see.

Dave
Thanks,

Haven't downloaded anything knowingly.

The process using so much CPU is: Image Name: System ; User Name: SYSTEM ……..in Task Mgr. Usually always running in the 90's.

Renamed HJT. Here's the Log:

I also tried to UNinstall AVG Anti-spware….it just hangs, cant close windows no matter what I try, even with Task Manager.
Well, let's get rid of that Toolbar if it's there.

Go to Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following if present.
Click Start > Control Panel > Double Click Add or Remove Programs:

CommonName Toolbar

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winnet] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~2\ADDRES~1\winnet.exe

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following file:

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~2\ADDRES~1\winnet.exe

Next, let's check for rootkits.

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click fsbl.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there…
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Download Rootkit Revealer here (bottom of page):

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern…itRevealer.mspx

Unzip the files and run RootkitRevealer.exe.

Press the scan button. Try to leave the system idle while running.

When done select File–>Save…and post the contents of the log.
