Need Help To Clean Up Daughter's Computer

I can look and tell my daughter's computer is eaten up with spyware, but I don't know how to clean it up! Can anybody help me? Here's her HT log:

We need to remove some bad programs from your system:
These programs are confirmed to have spyware or other unwanted parasites bundled into them :
Kazaa
Bearshare
Spyhunter
Grokster

Please go to Start/ Control Panel/ Add Remove Programs and remove them, if they are present.

Fix anything it finds - and Reboot

Please Download these 2 programs and run them Adaware and Spybot. Here's how:

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

After installing AAW, and before running the program.
Please be sure to update the reference file following the instructions here:
http://www.lavahelp.net/howto/updref/

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail level", select all options.
Click the "Tweaks" button.

Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.

Download Spybot Search and Destroy:

1. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ and download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

9. REBOOT to complete the scan.


Close all prgram windows and browsers.

Run HJT - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX ANYTHING
And post a new scan.

I did what you said–the desktop icons and unwanted 'favorites' are gone, but I still see a strange toolbar. Here's the new HJT log–any ideas?

Okay, we still have quite a bit to clean up. You may want to print this out as you won't have access to this page during the fix.

First - Make sure hidden files are showing, here's how:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Next we need to end some running processes, here's how:
Please open Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del and END PROCESS on the following file.
EnigmaPopupStop.exe

Now open HJT
Make sure all windows and browsers except HJT are closed.

You have PowerReg Scheduler in your log. . This is a registration reminder that is used by a number of different companies. It is not needed and some people think that it reports back to the company about your computer, so I suggest fixing it. However it is an Optional fix.

*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

While in Safe mode, Find and delete the following folders and files in RED:

As long as were in safe mode, lets delete the temp files:
Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

Open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted
put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed.

Empty the recycle bin -

Reboot normally

With all windows and broswers closed - Rescan with HJT and post a fresh log file.

Open HJT and with all windows browsers closed put a check mark beside this entry and select FIX:

We got it… Your log is clean.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure. I realize we may have done some of these items, but they bear repeating.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.


Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.


Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Install IE-SpyAd

E-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.


Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
