Well, somehow ( I have an idea) my computer got infected. When I use my browser search, clicking on a link takes me to some random website and not where I was suppose to go. I am close to just reformatting my HDD and reinstalling XP. Anyway, here is the log and thanks for any help.

I cannot see any sign that you are using a firewall. Are you using Windows XP Firewall? If not, I suggest that you switch it on immediately. I will make some recommendations for firewall programs once we have got your computer cleaned up.

———————————————————–

Click on Start, then Run, type cmd and click OK. A command prompt (black window) will open.
Type ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)
Hit the Enter key, type exit then hit Enter again.

Now lets check some settings on your system.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double-click on Network Connections.
Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, and left-click on Properties. Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

—————————————————————

You are running HijackThis from your desktop. We need to move this into its own folder so that its backup files are kept safe.
  • Click on Start then My Computer
  • Double-click on your Local Disk (usually C)
  • Right-click on the space on the right hand side and select New then Folder
  • Rename the folder HJT
  • Move HijackThis into the new folder
  • Create a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop
————————————————————–

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{94D7FDC4-8F06-42CF-88F1-88834B7B71E1}: NameServer = 85.255.116.147,85.255.112.211
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.147 85.255.112.211
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.147 85.255.112.211

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

Reboot the computer.

AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
  • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
  • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
————————————————

Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
—————————————————————–

Reboot in Normal Mode.

I'm gonna be deployed for the next 10 days or so (luckily to a tropical paradise in the south pacific) so I won't be able to follow up on this post till @ the 1st of june or later. Thanks again, this at least fixxed my known problems that I was aware of.
Good morning Herc130.

I'm gonna be deployed for the next 10 days or so (luckily to a tropical paradise in the south pacific) so I won't be able to follow up on this post till @ the 1st of june or later.

I hope you get a chance to enjoy the weather, beach, scenery etc. I'm jealous - sitting here in rainy Norfolk (UK)!

I'll keep the thread open for you.

Your HijackThis log looks clean. I'm glad that your browser is now behaving itself. The AVG Anti-Spyware scan only picked up one new item of any significance. I would like you to run an online scan to check that we're clear.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click the Accept button
  • Follow the prompts to download and install the ActiveX component(s) and other software
    • If a yellow information bar appears at the top of the browser window, click on it and select Install ActiveX Control
    • If a message box appears, click on OK or Run as appropriate
  • Click Accept again (see the note below if using IE7)
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as… button:
  • Save the report to your desktop (Save as type: Text document (txt))
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.
