I've been battling all sorts of weird browser hijacks and spyware on my computer for a while now. About 3 days ago I thought I'd finally cleaned my machine, but today I keep being redirected to a weird search engine again, so obviously I've missed something, and I can't figure it out for myself. Here is my logfile; any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello scully , welcome to the TC.

How could I refuse a X-Files fan :D

This is what I suggest you do.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.05 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi, thanks for reply. I've run as much as I could from the list above, but could only get the Panda online scan to run. I'm on a verrrrrry slow 56k dialup so I guess that may have affected it. I have run a full Norton antivirus scan, and an online McAffee scan, and those both came up clean, as did the Panda scan. I am still getting popups to the MS-Search search engine upon running Internet Explorer. I have previously had free6.se popups but managed to get rid of that. Weirdly, just now when I tried to get to this forum I got a dialogue box saying it couldn't be accessed and that the process had been aborted, although after that it loaded fine; I was offline at the time so maybe that's what caused it. I have also had a load of folders on my webspace deleted in the past few days, but I don't know if that's related to all of this or if it's a separate incident, so I wouldn't worry too much about that if it makes no sense.
Here is my logfile:

Thanks again for all your help.
Marie
I suggest you do this:

Open Spybot S&D, click Mode>Advanced>Tools>Resident and remove the check from the Tea Timer box. You can reinstate it later but we don't want it interfering with what we need to do. Reboot when done. Don't forget to turn it back on after we get it fixed.

Run HijackThis again and put a check by these.

R3 - URLSearchHook: MailTo Class - {FDE3577A-6254-181C-4E11-339E4F746BD3} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wins32t.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LXSUPMON] C:\WINDOWS\System32\LXSUPMON.EXE RUN

ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed,

O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2 (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi

Thanks so much for all your help so far. I followed all of your instructions apart from removing the 04 entry ending in lxsupmon, which I'm pretty sure is the supply manager for my printer (monitors ink levels). I *think* you may have fixed things now - I haven't had any popups yet! I started getting the free6 popups for a while before, but all of that and the MS search engine thing seem to have gone. Here's my log:

Looking good, I hope. Thanks sooooo much!

the 04 entry ending in lxsupmon, which I'm pretty sure is the supply manager for my printer (monitors ink levels). I *think*

You are correct. It's not needed at startup, but it's not bad either ;)

Good Job

Log looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

it's running fine now. no popups at all, not even after 20 minutes online (they were popping up at random intervals, so that just when i thought i'd fixed it for good i'd suddenly get a bunch of them again!)

will be sorting out the restore points this evening. (i'm using another computer at the moment)

donwloading as we speak!

i don't need a firewall and virusscanner, luckily, as I'm running Norton. Although I plan to switch to McAffee when it expires, because it seems McAffee picks up more adware than Norton. I sent Norton a quarantined file to scan and they never got back to me – McAffee detected it as infected, and Panda deleted it! Weirdness.
So now I'm armed to the teeth with stuff to stop these fools from attacking my computer.

Thanks very much for all your help - i really, really appreciate it!

Will there be a X-Files 2 movie?

Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help :wavey:

OMG, you do not want to get me started - it's the hottest topic of the century in the fan community!! lol. the short answer… there will be one, but it's still in development. ***hoping*** to shoot it next year. *climbs off of nerdy soapbox and hides*

thanks again for all your help, i'm incredibly grateful!
