Let's try for an even "more readable" view of that MSCONFIG System Configuration Utility Panel.
This is what I'd like the Panel to look like: [external image: Posted Image]
Notice that I used the "Column Divider" to expand the viewable column for Comand.
Next:
Press and Hold the "alt" Key, then Strike the Print Screen Key.
The "alt key" tells Print Screen to only capture the active Panel and not the desktop background.
(Though I imagine that you are proud of your baby. But we need to see the MSCONFIG Panel in better detail)
Open Paint
Start - All Programs - Accessories - Paint
Edit - Paste
File Save as : create a new file name
In the "drop-down" menu below filename select ".jpg" for - save as File Format.
.jpg will create a substantially smaller image file for upload.
Use PhotoBucket - Linked in my Signature Line below.
copy the URL Link from the Photobuck image, then use the TC Board's function to Insert Image into this thread instead of using Attached File.
You can safely "disable" ALL of those items.
You would have to take further action to disable ctfmon.exe (XP Speech), but I think you mention that you use it.
To disable it:
Control Panel - Regional and Language Options - Languages - Details - Advanced - checkmark/tick the box that says "Turn off advanced text services"
_____________
But where is your ANTIVIRUS and FIREWALL !!!! ????
Not good to be running with those items disabled. Not at all.
Best Regards
well, I use avast version 4.7 for antivirus and I have my firewall built into my linksys
and then there is the windows firewall (it sux but it is one) ( not sure I use it to be honest)
had McAfee and that was one problem after another so I got rid of it and went to the avast antivirus.
what do you recomend?
I am trying to figure out where many things are in there that should be there but dont show up like vid cards etc..
Let's have a look at the rest of that StartUp panel.
Scroll down to expose the rest of it, then take a new screen-shot.
Looks to me at this point that you have your AntiVirus "disabled".
Is it showing up in the "notification area" near you clock in the lower-right-hand corner of your Tray?
You're fairly well protected if you are behind a hardware firewall in a router, and have the XP Firewall filtering inbounds.
Check on your XP Firewall by looking in Control Panel - Security Center (I think that's available in XP Home)???
________
Video Card?
Check in Device Manager
Many Cards get activated with XP native Drivers, even though there may be updates at the manufacturer's Website.
Best Regards
here are three. I do show avg and I do have it on my computer. I only use it now and then it is for a backup checker when I worry about a big problem. it is the version that is free for so many weeks.
the few at the bottom of startup is just dead things I dont use. no bigies.
As for the vid card and stuff. I am saying I am looking for things you rold me to turn off that are not even there even though pcpitstop found them as well! So I stay confused….the good news is you are teaching me an awful lot about this as we go and I thank you for that.
gotta keep trying I guess.
oh yes I have the famous "a" in a blue ball that goes with avast…but I do not have the "i" in a blue ball the usually goes with it too.
I am curious as to why when I pull up msconfig then go to services I show quite a few things running. I do not understand the differance between the startup and the services but I am sure you do and that is why I leave this in your capable hands [external image: Posted Image]
I have also tried a program I have today (cyberlink power director)and it seems to have some lag time when I try to record with it. Am I needing to reinstall it?
Not sure but starting to wonder if I am going to need to do all items = (
Services are not the same as StartUp applications and processes.
In general, Services (the MS ones) are "required" items that function "behind the scenes" to support the way your Operating System creates the functions of Windows and creates the ability to interact with your network and the internet. Except in very rare circumstances it is best for you to leave your Services alone.
There are "some" Services that are rarely used and can be disabled in some circumstances, but you will not see any improved performance.
It seems that your interest in streamlining the function of your machine may be coming to a point where you can declare "Success".
Let your machine run as you presently have it set up for a week or so.
We can check back after that time, if you post an update to this thread.
I'll be glad to hear from you then, and/or one of the other talented helpers here will jump in to give you a hand if necessary.
More likely we'll be congratulating you on a job well done, that stayed well done, and didn't get "over-done".
Dough,
I thank you very much for your help once again. I will do as you think best, let it ride for a while and see.
I am sure this has been frustrating for you and I do apologies for creating a frustration. You are always to the point with your thoughts and your suggestions carry great weight with me. I am pleased that it has been you that has continued to help me when I have been dismayed.
You do a lot of work around here and I believe we all thank you and the others for that help. It is a job that can be hard when working with a person such as me that wants to know and to learn; therefore I congratulate you on your patience with me and the many others that might/might not say thank you.
I trust the T.C. website and their people, and have for a time now. This is the only place I go to for help when it is needed because I know I will always be given the best advice and I will always be told the truth whether I like that truth or not.
Respectfully,
Dangedcoyote
