I have a sicheation here! We were having a storm roll in. wife went to shut down computer. Was not aware of updates ready to be installed at next shutdown. She shut it (computer) down, saw files downloading told me about it and I said it was ok and nothing could be done now anyways. All at once total powerloss in the house for two or three seconds, (maybe a few more). Computer shutdown and downloads were not done. I later turned on after threat of lightning was gone to see what was new in the world. I noticed all at once things were amiss. I can not get task mgr to open at all and can not do a sys restore. I am doing a chkdsk and sfc scan now as I type. some things the computer did: pages froze, no task mgr to see what was running, pages froze more, could not close windows I had open or shut down. had to shut down with power button on tower. any ideas as to what I should do? Computer is ready to re-download the updates that did not download but I do not want to untill I know I am good to go again. Thanks for the help. :wavey:
ok an update, I know I have had more than just trouble out of ie7 and therefore I took it off some of the problems cleard up. before when I went to close a window the screen would remove all grafics and go whit, now it closes. I have been able to pull up task mgr and sys restore but it take like three minutes to do this. I still had those downloads to do that were being done earlier and so I have downloaded them. The chkdsk and all went fine no problems it saw then I ran the sfc /scannow. restart after all things done. I am lost and dont know what else to do. Has my main brain been fried? can I check? How?

Has my main brain been fried?

No.

You are probably just fine, since you say you have successfully run chkdsk /f /r and sfc /scannow, and uninstalled the IE 7.0.

Power Outages are always traumatic, and "could" have caused some damage.
The best you can do is clean things up and take a look.

Run your Disk Cleanup, and then run Disk Defrag (while in SAFE Mode).

Then post a PCPitstop Full Tests Tech Express so we can have a look.

Best Regards
God bless you doug, I have been freaked about this most of the night. I have so much stored on this thing and no back up (like a big dummy) I dont know what I will do if I loose it all.
here is the pc pit stop.

I hope I did this right, the link that is. I am not sure. I have seen others put theirs in here and right now mine looks different.
I did as you said. I went to SAFE mode and did a clean up and a defrag.
said defrag was not needed but I did it anyway. I use O&O defrag all the time but I had to use M.S. this time since I could not open o&o in safe mode for some reason
thanks for the help again. any questions hit me up and I will answer the best I can.
try this one, I emailed it to me
http://www.pcpitstop.com/TechExpress.asp?id=F79SHWTQ7KWSPZ7W
oh yes, i do have one from before this problem came about too
You are correct. O&O will not load in SAFE Mode.
Fortunately, O&O is a "standalone" application and does not try to remove/replace the MS Defrag tool.
So you can still use the MS Defrag while in SAFE Mode.
_______

You have (2) two AntiVirus Utilities installed…….. AVAST! and BullGuard(bitdefender)
No wonder you are at 100% CPU load!
Those two fight like a cat and dog trapped in a gunny sack!

My recommendation would be to Uninstall BullGuard.
If you like Bitdefender, go get it from Bitdefender.
"Branded versions" may or may not function the same as the original.

ok, I have done the fisrt part of the uninstalling the free trial of bitdefender8 and I am sure that I had it set to only come on and up when I asked for it to be opened. I dont use it much so no problem getting rid of it. I ran the pcpit test before with all the same things on and running and the cpu was no where near 100% so I do not understand why all of a suddon it became that way—–sugestions? As for the MSCONFIG: I did as you instructed and turned off all but the O&O I want to leave it on so it will run when I start up and not have to go to it every time since I am forgetful about it. However MANY of the items you said to "uncheck" were either not in the list at all or were not "checked" in the first place. I use the speech aplication for a disability and therefore I will leave it on also. I am now going to the pittest thing again to finnish what you said read and do. would you like to look at the two or three week old test I had done before this?
here is the latest test from them
http://pcpitstop.com/TechExpress.asp?id=F79SHWTQ7KWSPZ7W

they have me as running good. I did not have to change anything for the browser cash or whatever since you had me do that once before. I asked you what I should do and you asked someone and found that I should set mine to 80 and so I did. I did not ever reset it and now it reads as fine???!!!

Pages loading takes two minutes or better to load  I dont get that
any info you need from me?

I cant even find these in my msconfig startup:
Name Vendor Complete File Name
NVIDIA driver helper NVIDIA Corporation C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe
StarWind Rocket Division Software C:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\Sta … \StarWindService.exe
RichVideo C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Shared Files\RichVideo.exe
Office XP speech Microsoft Corporation C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
none of them are there.

I did do the MSCONFIG through startup; that was correct….yes?
doug, I have done the disk cleanup and still have 31962 kb of files in there? is this normal? I dont think so but want your advice. I am not used to it being so high
Run the following commands in the order that they are listed: Start - Run - (type) ipconfig /releaseall - enter ipconfig /renewall - enter ipconfig /flushdns - enter Reboot your machine. Give the internet a try again. Is it accessing better now?
ok, working on keeping all things in line: I have done all three ipconfigs. rebooted after that. I have also uninstalled my media player 11 and reinstalled it since I had problems with it lastnight too. I have reinstalled M.S. service pack2 over the one that is there already to see if that might be part of the problem also. when I boot up my computer it does seem to come up faster. However the first time I load my homepage there is a lag but not the two/three minute like before. I have been going to M.S. update to get all the latest updates that I might not have and to get back what I need. It seems like it is takeing foreverfor it to check for updates for my computer. this is a process that is taking upwards of ten minutes. I noticed that there was this time delay before and I may just be hypersensetive to it now. none the less I wanted you to know. Also the install process seems to take longer too. the 31962 kb does come from compressed files. I presume that you are pleased with my pc pitstop test. Is there an issue with me not seeing those few programs in msconfig/startup?
Well, yes. Your machine seems to be running very well by Pit Test Standards.
I'm a little "more picky".

What I don't like:
CPU Load 7%

Will you please take a screen-shot of your MSCONFIG - StartUp panel, and post it here?

Having a look at your StartUp panel will help me answer your earlier question:

Is there an issue with me not seeing those few programs in msconfig/startup?

Best Regards
I will do my best for you I only know of one way to do it and it is never clear to me. I admit my start up is just a hair faster then it was but not really. still takes some time.
ok here is the screen shot and I hope it works for you. Everything below the green check marks ..well have no check marks but I am happy to get a pic of them too And thanks for all this help AGAIN, I know you are busy and I thank you for all this
