Hi peanutt031,

I'd like you to download tools to clean this computer, are you able to do this either on the computer in question or by downloading on another computer and transferring?

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis from here:
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTInstall.exe

Once you have downloaded the new version, use Windows Explorer (right-click Start & select Explore) to delete the old program file which looks like it might be located on a USB drive K: .
Then run the new version's installer HJTInstall.exe and follow the prompts.
After installing, HijackThis will open automatically, select Do a system scan and save a logfile

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, please tell me if your Symantec subscription is current and it has the latest updates.
I did both of these. My HJT log and Smitfraud report are below.

Hi peanutt031,

The log you posted showed the 'fix' option #2 run from Safe Mode, not the 'Search' option #1 which I asked for. Helpers here do things in a certain way mainly for reasons of safety, so if you wish to receive help, it's important that you follow the instructions as posted.

Also, please tell me if your Symantec/Norton antivirus subscription is current and whether it has the latest updates.

————————————————————————

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then press Save list…
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.
I can not get on the internet with this computer. When I try to open internet explorer it says it could not connect. I have even tried it with Fire Fox portable wich gives me the same results. I have other computers connected to the same hub and they are working fine. When i try to open up Nortons, I get an hour glass and it freezes up. Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks for your help!
Hi peanutt031,

OK we'll use a couple of tools which you can download and transfer, please download Dr Web Cureit and Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)

First, please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5 and remove it - it is now out of date and a security risk. You can get the latest update (version 6 update 3) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

Next please do a scan with Dr Web Cureit:
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)

Next please scan with Deckard's System Scanner
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post the Dr Web log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you. Please also tell me about your Norton subscription. The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.
I had updated Nortons about a month ago, but now it wont even come up. When I try to open it the Nortons screen comes up and freezes. Then I have to do a ctl/alt/del to get out of it. here are the first two posts:

Hi peanutt031,

It looks like Dr Web make some false detections, we'll move the files back and clean up with a batch file:

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Copy/paste the following quote box into Notepad. Before starting select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.

@echo off
move /y "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\KillWind.exe" "C:\hp\bin\"
move /y "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\GTDownAO_106.ocx" "C:\Program Files\Common Files\AolCoach\en_en\"
move /y "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\DoctorWeb\Quarantine\inetchk.exe" "C:\Program Files\music_now\"
del /q /f "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Desktop\smitfraudfix.exe"
rd /q /s C:\SmitfraudFix
rd /q /s C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
dir "C:\hp\bin\KillWind.exe" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\results.txt"
dir "C:\Program Files\Common Files\AolCoach\en_en\GTDownAO_106.ocx" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\results.txt"
dir "C:\Program Files\music_now\inetchk.exe" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\results.txt"

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, post the contents of this file in your next response.

————————————————————————

Please upload a file for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\aamd532.dll

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

Note: If Jotti is busy, you can use VirusTotal instead.

————————————————————————

Download Gmer to your Desktop from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop
  • Disconnect from internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop
————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the results.txt output, the Jotti results, the GMER log and a new HijackThis log.
I did everything except load and run Jotti. I still cant get on the internet. Here are the other files you asked for.

Hi peanutt031,

I should have asked you to copy the file before uploading to Jotti, sorry about that. Do you have a USB drive you can use? If so, please tell me which drive letter it has.

Apart from that final check, your system appears to be clean of malware, so I'd say the Symantec and internet connection problem have other causes. These issues could be related, in that the Symantec problem could be causing the internet connection block. In any case, you may need to reinstall or repair Nortons - do you have the installation media or did the package come pre-installed on the computer?

Please try this, it will give some basic diagnostic information about the network issue:

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Copy/paste the following quote box into Notepad. Before starting select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.

@echo off
ipconfig /all >> "%userprofile%\desktop\network.txt"
ping 4.2.2.2 >> "%userprofile%\desktop\network.txt"
nslookup www.test.com >> "%userprofile%\desktop\network.txt"

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal. Another text file should appear on your Desktop called network.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.

Post the contents of this file in your next response.
Here is the network file. Other than not bieng able to get on the internet, the computer seems to be running fine now. Could the malware that I had changed my settings? Hi peanutt031,

Could the malware that I had changed my settings?

Anything is possible, but I don't think malware is the cause here. In fact, most malware wants the internet working so it can do it's evil business!

Please tell me if you are trying to connect via the wireless connection or the wired connection.
Also, please tell me whether you have installation media for Nortons, and if you can copy/transfer that file to another computer for scanning.

Please check the Device Manager as follows:
Right-click My Computer (from the Desktop or Start Menu) and select Manage
Click Device Manager and check for any devices with exclamation marks. Please note the details of any that have this mark.

Once complete, please let me know about the above :)
There are no exclamation points. I downloaded Nortons over te internet. I am tring to connect through a wired connection. I will try to connect wirelessly tonight. Everything seems to be working great now except the internet. I might have a bad LAN card. Thanks for all of your help!
Hi peanutt031,

As far as the LAN connection goes, the wired connection shows "disconnected" - I'd try changing the cable to see if that makes any difference.

So is Norton's still causing a problem? If your antivirus program isn't working you are very vulnerable. If you downloaded Norton's via the internet can you reinstall it? If so, we can use a special tool to remove Nortons and you could reinstall from there.

I'd like to get a scan of the file I asked you to upload earlier. If you have a flash drive please copy the file across to it and upload it to Jotti from another computer. You can copy it to a flash drive by pressing Start->Run, copy/paste this command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c copy C:\WINDOWS\system32\aamd532.dll Z:\

You'll need to substitute the drive letter of your flash drive for Z

Once complete, let me know how you got on with the LAN connection, how you'd like to proceed with Nortons and the scan results from Jotti.
