Something tries to load and execute files by using my cmd

Hi,

Could you please help me with a nasty problem I have on my PC. Something writes commands by using my cmd and tries to download some files and execute them. Usually this happens When I'm surfing on the Internet (on web sites that I find ok and that I trust) but also for example when I'm writing a Word document and just having the browser open in the background.

This is what happens: The "Run" box is opened and something starts to write the command for cmd. When the command is executed, my firewall askes if ftp should access the Internet (I think that is the protocol that is used for downloading the file). If I deny that, it doesn't naturally go any further.

Below you can see examples of the commands that are run at my PC. Are you able to tell what is doing this and what can I do to stop it? I have run my antivirus software (Avira antivir), Spybot and AdAware. My antivirus software Avira quaranteed the file xpicleanup.exe". I don't know if this has something to do with this. After that file was quaranteed, this has happened again. At the end is also the log that HijackThis saved when this happened the last time.

hi Jussi, do you use ftp? if not look under services for File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and turn it off. like this: go to start>run and type in–> services.msc,<–in the list of services that comes up look for>>.file transfer protocol right click on it and select properties. under the general tab: make sure that the service status is: Stopped and the Startup type is: disabled (you might also be able to block it (ftp) in ZA some way) ———————————— next update AVg antispyware, boot into safe mode and run AVG. after the scan click reports at the top and save the report on your computer somewhere, then post the report in next reply. you can edit out the cookies if there is alot of them. to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart. chose first option form the list: safe mode shelf life
Hi shelf life, Thanks for your reply. It has taken a while for me to answer as the problem exists on a computer which I don't have direct access to very often and I usually access it remotely. Now I finally could scan the computer in safe mode. FTP has been blocked with ZoneAlarm. That's how I've prevented this thing from succeeding in what it is doing in the first place. However, that doesn't stop it from trying. Below you can see the AVG scan report when scanning in safe mode. I didn't remove the cookies from the log as that is pretty much all that are there. Could it be that this thing is on some site in web and uses cookies for executing itself on my computer? At least it seems like there is nothing weird on the computer. ——————————————————— AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report ——————————————————— + Created at: 13:52:25 7.4.2007 + Scan result: :mozilla.80:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.2o7 : Cleaned. :mozilla.81:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.2o7 : Cleaned. :mozilla.48:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Adtech : Cleaned. :mozilla.49:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Adtech : Cleaned. :mozilla.50:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Adtech : Cleaned. :mozilla.96:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Advertising : Cleaned. :mozilla.97:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Advertising : Cleaned. :mozilla.98:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Advertising : Cleaned. :mozilla.46:C:\Documents and Settings\Lea\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3kd0jbbj.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Atdmt : Cleaned. Yes, I have installed this software. My mum usually operates this computer and she often has problems with it. RealVNC is an easy way to help her.
hi,

is this the computer where the cmd prompt is being used? maybe somebody else is doing this via realVNC?
the hjt log looks ok and you have used both antivrus and antimalware software to scan with.

lets see if this can dig up anything;

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Hi,

Here are the results from Silent Runner, are you able to see anything weird?

I don't think these problems have anything to do with RealVNC as the server is running only when my mom has some problem and she starts the server and calls me and askes me to log in. So it is not constantly running. We also use password authentication when connecting to the computer. These problems (something using the cmd) occur also when the VNC server is not running so I don't believe that is the reason.

hi Jussi,

do you have some toolbars installed in internet explorer? i saw these in the silent runners log:

Extensions (Tools menu items, main toolbar menu buttons)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\
{ADB8C5F2-C5B1-4C4C-A7F6-528FB956114D}\
"ButtonText" = "Tuki"
"Exec" = "http://tuki.elisa.net/" [file not found]

{D6A24304-50F4-4EB8-B9B2-284ED305A451}\
"ButtonText" = "SMS-viesti"
"Exec" = "http://sms.kolumbus.fi/" [file not found]

{F9E07965-A08B-4E8E-B41B-699B5EB26A2E}\
"ButtonText" = "Palvelut"
"Exec" = "http://service.kolumbus.fi/" [file not found]

and these ip's:
81.197.204.41
91.152.92.212

resolve to:
a81-197-204-41.elisa-laajakaista.fi ([removed])
a91-152-92-212.elisa-laajakaista.fi ([removed])

———————-
its these in the hjt log:

O9 - Extra button: Tuki - {ADB8C5F2-C5B1-4C4C-A7F6-528FB956114D} - http://tuki.elisa.net/ (file missing) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra button: SMS-viesti - {D6A24304-50F4-4EB8-B9B2-284ED305A451} - http://sms.kolumbus.fi/ (file missing) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra button: Palvelut - {F9E07965-A08B-4E8E-B41B-699B5EB26A2E} - http://service.kolumbus.fi/ (file missing) (HKCU)

of course this is only a guess, those buttons could have nothing to do with it, the more i think about it they probably have nothing to do with the problem.

another thing to try is to clean out temp files just in case something is lurking in there. you can do it easily with atfcleaner:
