Welcome to the forum, your friend has some real malware issues. My first concern is that this:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Qumfxrxs] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ICROSO~1\smss.exe is reading a a backdoor trojan. If you wish to scan that file to find out, here are free online scanners to use.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustota...h/index_en.html

Since I believe it is a backdoor trojan, I believe you should have this information:
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

I will proceed with the cleanup instructions and if you decide to reformat, post to let me know so I can close the topic.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune....tent/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall RXToolBar, TBONBin, Registry Cleaner Trial, PuritySCAN By OIN, OIN or OuterInfo, Starware316, Need2Find, Claria, NEWDOTNET (or anything that looks like it) MyWebSearch (or anything that looks like it) and any other program you know should not be there.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

I am always amazed at how you guys can know exactly what is what with these things. When I finally started using his comp a bit I recognized Starware instantly. Past computers and many purgings of such things have made me very aware of those types of innocent looking leeches. I do plan on formatting and reinstalling. He only uses it for games and surfing basicly so luckily I don't have to sweat him freaking out on me. He's in Korea at the moment. I do have some questions about the reinstall. I can probably answer it for myself, but I'll ask anyway. This has to be a full format right? Because if it is just set back to its original setup it will still have the backdoor present? (answer for myself: Yes duh...) I just thought I would ask. Neither of us have a XP Pro disc so I will have to buy one. Ugh... I think he has used this computer to purchase some things. He plays WoW so yeah *cough* I will have to contact him about that to inform him he may need to check his bank account and such. Although knowing his attitude he might not care <_< . I do appreciate all your work and I thankyou as this seems to be the only place forum wise that I have gotten solid help two different times. I really appreciate everything that you ladies and gentlemen provide. Truly thankyou pskelley. I appreciate your time and the information you have provided. Unfortunately I don't think however that telling my friend not to do certain things will help. He's rather hard headed about ignoring danger. He's military... :D

Well...you can tell him he has a real mess on his hands.

I am always amazed at how you guys can know exactly what is what with these things.

We have a lot of search tools including Goggle to help, but I have looked at logs from around 15,000 computers so that helps also.

http://www.cyberwalk...nstall-faq.html

http://www.google.co...G=Google Search

Once you review that information and that in the links I provided earlier, if you still have questions, post them. I will do my best to give you answers.

Thanks...Phil
