Hi all

Pasted below is my hijack this log. I've been hijacked by what I suspect is coolwebsearch.searchx. The one deviation from what I've read about this is that its said this uses a hole in MSJVM to infect, and I've never had that on this system.

At first I wasn't too concerned, just mildly irritated by the ignoring of my home page settings and the 'You have spyware' popups, but I suspect it has accessed my personal information, as since a day or 2 after it hit I've been getting over 200 emails a day (that haven't been blobut it takes over again after next reeboot if not before.cked by our spamfilter, so possibly more) with titles that make me want to throw up. I've ried CWShredder which does temporarilly get rid of it (it seems, but still doesn't let me download adaware)

Anyway, here's the log. Thanks in advance for any help

Mark

Hi Mark,

Welcome to TomCoyote Forums. You appear to have a new variant of the CoolWebSearch parasite; it's a particularly nasty bit of work that requires some trouble to remove. :(

Follow this link: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip and download "PV.ZIP". Unzip it to your desktop; it WILL NOT WORK if you run it from inside the zip.

After it's unzipped go to your desktop, open the PV folder that was created and double-click on "runme.bat"

A DOS window will open; please select option 1 for explorer dll's by typing 1 and then pressing ENTER.

Notepad will open, with a log in it; please copy and paste the log into your reply to this post. Be sure to use "Add Reply" to append it here. DO NOT start a new thread, as that makes it very difficult to follow the sequence of events as your log is sorted, if the successive replies are spread out into different posts.
Here's the log as requested. Much much thanks for taking the time to look at this, as I'm at my wits end. Especially not helpful as the system this has infected is currently having to be used for work (Software Development heh) as I'm stuck at home with a broken toe for a few weeks.

Thanks Again

Mark

P.S. I'm also including an updated hijackthis.log at the end as I've had a few unsuccessful attemps to reomve this, and the dll name has changed (jaid.dll being the main culprit if I read this right)

Hi Mark,

Sorry to hear about the toe; I know those things can be painful. :(

Maybe you can send this next step in the FIX process to someone at work (I hope your SysAdmin won't go ballistic at this) and have him/her run it and get us a new log so we can go on to the next step. As you have noticed, this thing will morph, so we need to sorta sneak up on it.

It would be helpful if you could get a directory of all the dll files in that folder, sorted by date. Look for other random-named files about the same size that have the same or nearby dates that they were installed. Don't kill 'em (YET), but send us a list if you can.

Please pardon the colorful directions- it helps some non-computer types to have these things highlighted that you would take for granted.

———————————————————————-

Please download TheKillbox from here: http://download.broadbandmedic.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi?id=0

Unzip the files to any convenient PERMANENT folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following: C:\WINDOWS\System32\jaid.dll

DON'T click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The filename and path should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

When you're back in windows, please run the latest version of cwshredder. Go to this site http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip and download CWShredder. Unzip it to any convenient PERMANENT folder (such as C:\CWS) and run it. Click on "Search for Updates" and install any it finds. Then CLOSE YOUR BROWSER AND ANY WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE IT'S RUNNING IN and click on FIX (not SCAN, which will NOT fix anything), and let it fix everything it finds. Follow the prompts, and do as it says.

REBOOT and post a new pv.zip explorer log along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Hi K3D Well, I've got it fixed (was actually my home laptop was having the problem) To aid the cause of helping out anyone else who gets this version (and stomping on the scum who do this) I've included the solution below : Ran the Find-All util which I found on another forum which alerted me to a super-hidden file in system32 called ctl.dll (seems it is normally called this or something similar like ctll.dll). Then booted into the windows recovery console, renamed the file (couldn't immediately delete it) to fsck.dl. Did attrib-a-r on the renamed file, then deleted it. After that rebooted and reran cwshredder to permanently shread CWS. After that I did a repair install of XP to clear up some residual problems that my or may not have had anything to do with this. Result: PROBLEM SOLVED. Thanks for your help Mark – Edit: Forgot to say, if you can't find Find-All the other way of figuring out the filename is to run a defrag - it'll error saying can't move c:\windows\system32\/dll Anyway, back to convalescing
Hi Mark, Thanks for the Heads-Up. It always helps to be working on the machine that's actually infected. ;) Some of these newer CWS variants are really tricky, and a bear to remove. I'm glad you got it whipped. Now, just take care of that toe…
Glad we could help :D
