I am hoping one of you clever people out there can help me.
I have ran spybot regularly for the last few months. Have now ran ad-aware and have recently installed sygate firewall. I use etrust EZ anti-virus.
However, I keep getting problems with additional search pages coming up after a google search (isearch for example). I am also getting 'hotsearchbar' appearing even though I keep taking it off. In addition I am seeing addtional items in my favourites menu that I haven't put there. I don't know if all this stuff is connected or not, but my browser speed has slowed down and my internet keeps crashing and asking me to send a report to microsoft.
I have tried to have a look and delete the offending stuff, but to be honest I don't really know what I'm doing and need the support of the experts!

Please find below my hijack this log.

Many thanks in anticipation for your time.

Hello vicster, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. We can do a little cleaning but first your HijackThis.exe needs a folder to live in so it can store backups for safety and logfiles you will create. Look at it now:
C:\Program Files\HijackThis.exe. Go back there and make a new folder, call it HJT and move the HJT.exe into that folder. Then it will look like this:
C:\Program Files\HJT\HijackThis.exe. Thanks.

After this is done, scan with HijackThis and put a check in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows then click on "Fix Checked"

Run Cleanmgr: Start, Run type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then ok. Check and remove anything windows locates. Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. Use the two links below to stay in this thread and post a new log for a final check along with and feedback you think we should have.

Hi pskelley
Thank you so much for your response.

Have done everything you suggested and ran hijack this again.

Have attached the log below.

I forgot to mention that various words on my pc were turning into an internet link (for example, 'internet', 'news', 'porn', 'spyware' and 'date') Also that jpg images of an adult nature were appearing in my 'recent docs' list. Would all of this have been due to the stuff you asked me to delete?

Could this also be the reason why the internet kept crashing with messages asking to send reports to microsoft?

Since my initial posting I have installed SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. Along with all the protection software I mentioned earlier, am I in a safer position from these nasty people who put this rubbish on other folks pc's?

Many many many thanks for your help by the way. It's really pleasing to know they're are still genuine people out there who want to help others. After just one posting pskelley, I am already eternally grateful to you!

Cheers!

Hard to tell what was causing the problem. Probably the HotSearch Toolbar that was plugged in as an ActiveX control? The malware writers do not always take the time to make sure there are no errors in their software, this is what causes the error messages in your browser.

Since my initial posting I have installed SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. Along with all the protection software I mentioned earlier, am I in a safer position from these nasty people who put this rubbish on other folks pc's?

When you ask a technician to work on your log, you should not do removals or installations during the process. This did not cause an issue this time, but please remember in the future, if you ask for help, let the person helping you direct all activities, that's what we are for. Thanks.

Many many many thanks for your help by the way. It's really pleasing to know they're are still genuine people out there who want to help others. After just one posting pskelley, I am already eternally grateful to you!

You are certainly welcome, and as you will see in the all clean message, SpywareBlaster and SpywardGuard are two programs we would have suggested you install.

Your log appears clean now and if you have no future issues, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to keep you clean and safe online.

I also suggest, as you will read in the above links, that you install IE-Spyad, I am including links to three tutorials that will help you with the programs you just installed and also IE-Spyad.

Hi psKelley Thank you so much again for your time help and advice. Apologies for adding additional software whilst you were advising me. Will certainly remmeber for next time. All is now well agaion on the victser PC!! Can't tell you how pleased I am to be clean again! Am still working through all the info and tuturiols you have recommended and have some really interesting stuff so far. However, wanted to post my thanks sooner rather than later. Although I have used computers at work for many years I am still very 'green' to the world of personal IT (only had our PC at home for about 5 months). Thanks to your advice I already feel much more knowledgable about security, how to protect myself and were to go for the best support. (that's here by the way!) As a struggling working mum with two small children, cash is somewhat limited. However, as soon as pay day arrives I WILL be making a donation to try and secure the future of precious sites like this one. Many thanks again. Vicster
Thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated. Make sure you take apart those links in the "AllClean" message. Those are some of the most knowledgeable folks I know. Good luck and God Bless…pskelley
