Good morning

I have a couple of problems:

1. I am getting emails that show stock market info or prescription drugs and then a bunch of jibberish. None of them make sense, but they are starting to freak me out. Some of the subject matter is rather disturbing. I wouldn't normally think that a Trojan would be responsible but I read another post and a Member suggested that the girl had a Trojan. I reported all the emails as Spam, but they keep coming from from different addresses.

2. My monitor does not turn on like it should. If I turn off the monitor and not the PC it does not come back on when I try to power it on. Sometimes the power light is lit and sometimes it's not. If I keep pushing the button it will come on after a while. Same thing when I shut down and reboot. I tried to change the resolution and the refresh rate but it was not successful.

Hi and welcome to the forum! To your two questions I've got my answers here: 1) You're most likely receiving junk mail 'cos your email address has ended up somehow to those junk mailers. Your address may have been on some web page or maybe you've taken part in some competition and have entered your email address to question form or something like that. At this point there isn't any more effective way than get yourself a new addy which you won't give to any outsider. 2) Your monitor may be near its end. How old is it? Your log didn't show any trojan however I'd like to see a fresh log since this one is over a week old. This time please turn off notepad's word wrap (format->word wrap on notepad's menu) before you paste log here. It's more readable when there are not those blank lines in log.

I don't know if you have a trojan or not because I can't read your log the way you posted it.

• Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
• Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
• Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.

As far as your monitor, you can post about it here as this forum is for removing malware only.

As far as spam email, what you may need to do is to install a spam filter , if you open or reply to these emails you will just keep getting more.

• Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
• Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
• It should have an icon next to it:
  
  Select it and click Remove.
• Reboot your system.
• Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
• Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
• If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
• If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
• Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify

I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future



If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < -- After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes

Ok, I am going to provide a list of recommended software to install to help keep you secure. Just remember that with Anti Virus software MORE IS NOT BETTER so whatever you install you should only have one, but you can install all the recommended spyware programs on my list with no problem.

You have Ewido installed, its an outdated version and Ewido was bought by AVG and is one of the best spyware programs available. So I would suggest you uninstall Ewido via the Add - Remove programs in the Control Panel.


As far as AV Software, I stay away from the suites that contain all the programs, AV, Anti Spyware, Firewall, POP up blockers and the like, they tend to get in your face and use HUGE amounts of system resources. Myself I use just Norton Anti Virus and the free version of Zonealarm as my firewall.


Here is the link and the tutorial for AVG Anti Spyware, its a trial but after the trial you can still check for updates , run the scans and remove what it finds, you will just loose the Background Guard feature.



Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.

• Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
• Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
• On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
• Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
• Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
• Under Reports
• Select Automatically generate report after every scan
• Un-Select Only if threats were found
• Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode

• Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
• As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
• This will bring up a menu.
• Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
• Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

• Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
• AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
• Once the scan is complete do the following:
• If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
• Next select the Reports icon at the top.
• Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
• make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
• Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

I dont need the report

• Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  
• Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
