:wavey: Howdy folks. We're having a problem over here. I've read and read
and tried almost all advice I could find, read handbooks, read internet, tried
as much as I could before asking for help. But I'm lost as to what to do now.

There's a couple problems here on the PC. I've got the Avira Antivirus Personal Addition on
my pc. I also have Spyware Detector. Nothing is resolving the problems.

We're getting at least 18000 emails at one time, and no program seems to be stopping it as
of yet. Most of the mail keeps coming from one of the postmasters or mailer dameon things,
and it seems to somehow be sending off our PC to people, somehow, using our email.

I cannot seem to figure out where a program might be hiding that could be doing this.
I think I've gotton rid of over 6800 virus's, trojuns, and worms that don't include the malware
stuff.

Here's a copy of the HiJack this log. Perhaps you can find the problem.

It seems that everytime I turn around, something has downloaded itself somehow. I've got to get this
thing fixed, as it is a Church PC, and I don't know if a person who was using it, got on to web sites
they should not have, and we got the bugs that way, or if it came in thru email or what. :rant2:

Anyhelp you can give would be tremendously appreciated.

Sincerely,
Diva :weee:
Thanks Waterfalls for the quick response. this ordeal is crazy. I have downloaded another program by Cloudmark to at least attempt to get these emails into a file and somehow get them reported in a desperate attempt to stop this. I checked and rechecked the scans from today on smitrem as well as hijack this to try to figure out if something is downloaded there. On another program, it says I have adware.p2p networking. All I could do was quarantine it for the time being, just to see if that would stop it. So far, nothing has. Again, Thanks :D for looking into this for me. I will check back later to see what you find out. it's after 2 am here, so I'm off to bed for now. :) Thanks again. Sincerely Diva
Also, what do you know about a bunch of files called wuauclt.exe? one place it says it is a trojun, or a cult something, then another says it's safe. Please let me know what you know about this particular set of files. don't mean to be a pain, but in the last hour, I had over 8000 emails alone, that don't include the rest of the day. thanks for your patience with me, as well. Diva
Hi,

Regarding wuauclt.exe, the file is the Windows Update client (Windows AutoUpdate Client by its full name) which connects to the Microsoft website to download and install the latest updates for the Windows operating system. As long as it is in the correct folder, i.e., C:\windows\system32\ (assuming Windows is installed on the C:\ drive), then it is a legitimate and necessary file.
Now, please do the following.

• You are currently running HijackThis from a "Temp" folder. HijackThis will create a number of backup files which may be lost, along with HijackThis, if left in a temporary folder.
Please create a permanent folder such as C:\HJT\ and move the HijackThis program there.

To create a permanent folder:
- Click My Computer, then C:\
- In the menu bar, File -> New ->Folder.
- That will create a folder named New Folder which you can rename to "HJT".
- Now move hijackthis.exe to the C:\HJT\ folder.

• Download Silent Runners.zip and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click onto the file
  • Select "Extract All" -> click "Next"
  • In the "Files will be extracted to this directory" window, type: C:\SilentRunners -> click "Finish"
  • Open C:\SilentRunners and double-click SilentRunners.vbs
  • You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO."
  • If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run.
  • This script is not malicious so please allow it.
  • A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file, and copy & paste it in your next reply.
• Post back with the results of SilentRunners and a new HijackThis log.
 Hey There Waterfalls,

Ok I did what you said, I think. Sorry couldn't get back here sooner, got kids? lol, then ya know
how it is.

OK here's the Silent Runner Log.

 PS. I had also come accross a file, all it says on it, it smitfrau. I'm not sure if it's connected to anything. I don't remember seeing it originally when I downloaded smitrem months back. If I'm correct, isn't it a spyware trojun or something? Seems I read something on that. Don't know if it showed up on the HJT log, hopefully I done all the logs correctly this time. Again, Thanks for taking a look at all this with me. Sincerely, Diva
Hey Waterfalls, updated this, because we can no longer use half the programs on the PC.
Whatever is going on, has locked up the email now for the Church and Bible School. There is
150,000 since the last download, 2 hours ago. The Pop server keeps going out, I think it's
overloaded now with this many coming in at one time.

PC acts up quite a bit, if I try to do a Virus Scan or anything.

IT had a program in here called Smitfrau and it was spelled just like that, but now I cannot find it.

Another program said we had desktop trojuns, but of course you have to buy the program in order
to clear it up. We've already done this with another program, but it certainly hasn't fixed anything.

I'm not sure what's going on. And I sure hope you don't think I'm being an annoying pest.
I'm just simply desperate to get to the bottom of this and resolve it.

This is my Dad's pc. ( I think at age 70, they lose much patience and think everything should be
done instantly, like our 5 year old children. ) He's at the point of starting over, completely
reinstalling windows XP and thinking it will all be cleaned up that way. It seems the answer should
be a little easier than this. There's so much information on here, I'de hate for him to lose it all,
especially where all the students are concerned. most of their homework and lessons are on here.

anyways, am trying to be patient., and again, Thank you for all the help you are giving me.
I really do appreciate it very much.

Diva

My Mouse is now moving on its own also!
MSNMSR will no longer work.
Almost all password related programs are just about closed down, as no password is working now for most things.
My Dad tried to take out "Outlook Express" and the thing kept downloading itself over and over.
He thought maybe if he could get the mail off, and reinstall, it would solve it, but that didn't work.

anyways, here's the log.
Hi,

Please do the following in the order given. You will need to print or copy these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

• Download and install Ewido Anti-Spyware 4
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept the default installation path: C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0 and click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. You can select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. If you choose to do this, then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
7. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • In Services, click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Disabled".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
8. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
9. Exit Ewido when done.
Do NOT perform a scan yet.

• Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Scan with Ewido as follows:
1. Launch Ewido, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports\
6. Exit Ewido when done.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while Ewido is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper Ewido's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If Ewido "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.
2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Online Scanner
1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select Accept
2. A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
3. Select Install to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click Allow
5. When the download is complete it will say ready, click Next
6. Click Scan Settings and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE, then click OK
7. Select a target to scan: Click on My Computer
8. When the scan is complete choose to save the results as Save as Text

• Post back with the results of the Ewido scan, the results of the Kaspersky scan and a new HijackThis log.
 A'ight now…. here's this set of scanned logs.

This is from Kaspersky, I couldn't figure out where to save anything.

The scan is complete.
No malware has been detected. The sections that have been scanned are CLEAN.

Report is empty.
Please note: The free Kaspersky On-line Scanner does not provide comprehensive protection and cannot prevent future infections. It only detects malware that has already penetrated your storage devices. We strongly recommend that you use a fully-functional antivirus solution to protect your computer at all times.

Please wait, this process may take a long time depending on the selected target. If you want to continue browsing, open a new window.

It went all the way to 100 percent, but it showed nothing at all.
 Hi Waterfalls, Just for kicks and giggles I had tried to go into the regedit keys, for microsoft, and changed the values, redownloaded an earlier version of IE and OE. IT worked for about 1 hour, there was absolutely no emails that came thru, other than a " real " one. But, this am, I had seen that my Father was into the email, and there was almost 900,000 of them. He had already been downloading them to delete for a few hours before church. I thought maybe, reloading in case there was a problem connected here, that it might possible resolve the problem. But that was kind of just a fun waste of time. (won't know sometimes til you try something right?) Anyways, hope maybe you seen something in the logs, that i didn't see, that might resolve the problem, I was wondering, because this had happened to me in Europe one time, that at the main server where the mail came from, they had some major virus in there, and something similar happened to all of us over there, using that particular email. Is it possible, that maybe the problem might be on that end? Thanks for sticking with me on this! I'm at a loss of what else to do or try. -Diva
