Hi Guys, I'm new to HJT. I'm pretty good with a PC and can find my way around, but this is my friends laptop and I don't want to screw it up since he has no recov disc for it. As with others here, Spybot & Ad-Aware doesn't get rid of the browser pop up ads ("block pop ups" is checked in IE AND Zone Alarm). Here's the log and findlop logs (if needed). Thanks in advance for any help.

You may want to print out these insrtuctions for reference

Next Please Download NoLop to your desktop from one of the links below...
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it[list]
  • Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log
--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program.

Is this from a Safe Mode boot? It doesn't appear the AVG anti-virus is running. Sorry to be a pain, but Safe Mode doesn't show everything that will need to be removed.

No pain dude, I'm new to this and am not sure when you want a scan from desktop or safe mode. That last was from desltop but I thought I'd shut down ZA & AVG so as not to figure into the mix. My bad. Here's a new HJT log from desktop (not safe mode) with ZA & AVG on.:

Alright

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {fb02995d-89ea-4c60-8928-cfb1d1a9df94} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\immnor.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: immnor - immnor.dll (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Posted Image icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on 6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed
Sun Java Test

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Layest Java is in & working. Clean sytem out with ATF. No pop up ads happening. Puter is faster (considering he only has 256 RAM). Seems like all is cool now. Take a look at the log. Are we good?

You can remove any programs I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there:

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Great! Thanks for all your help. You were awesome. I'll pass this info onto my friend in hopes he keeps this thing clean. I put all shortcuts on his desktop for defrag, ad-aware, spybot, aft, etc. I'll make a fresh restore point now and will donate to Tom's Forum as all should who uses it. GREAT Forum man! Thanks again.
