A really really strange entry

A program appeared, if you want to call it that. in my Zone Alarm program control under program and the entry reads  yes that is it just a square and it was given internet access. I used the options in ZoneAlarm and killed the process but after a few days when I check it has permission again to access the internet. There is another program doing the same thing and that is ker\rpc.exe. When I do a search on the computer nothing comes up. This is very strange so has anyone else seen anything like this?

Welcome to Tom Coyote that file could be a possible back door trojan but I wont know anything until you post a Hijackthis log.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use [external image: Posted Image]and not [external image: Posted Image]
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Thanks, Here is the HJT log,

Sorry about that. Hope this one is better,

Thats so much better  Thank you.

I am not looking at anything real serious in your log, just a few things to fix.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Post the AVG log and a New HJT log please.
Ken, Ran the AVG anti-spyware and it did not find anything so no log. I did find an entry using regedit that had the little box under Search Assistant-ACMru-5603 and I deleted it. Followed your instructions and here is the new HJT log. There is one other entry in ZoneAlarm program control that shows up as "S" and refers to WINDOWS\SOFTWAREREDISTRIBUTION\Download\Install\NDP20-KB922770-X86.EXE and looks like a window security download but I am not sure. The ker\rpc.exe entry in the ZoneAlarm program control was removed but it re-appeared so I denied it access to the internet but it granted itself permission again so I used the kill feature in ZoneAlarm to block it. So far that has held. I have done a search on the computer for anything like it but nothing comes up in the search. Thanks again for your help. Chuck

The rest of your log looks fine  If there was something bad on your system AVG would have found it. By the way, you can still use AVG after the trial to get updates, run scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature. So to purchase the full version or uninstall it is totally your call.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
