Hi all,

I hope this is a legitimate application but I somehow doubt it.

Yesterday I recieved a prompt from my firewall that was asking me to grant access to a program situated in my roaming directory:
c:\users\\appdata\roaming\ugtoi.exe

I didn't allow access to this application as I don't know what it is.
On trying to look in that location the executable is not there.

Very shortly after this I also got a prompt from my antivirus Avast which noted some strange behavior possibly a hueristic virus in the following location:
c:\users\\appdata\local\temp\0.4668733509543366.exe

I've set this program to run in Avast's sandbox when it next runs but did find it sitting in that location.
Below are the details I could find of that application:
Product name: jhPEY
Original filename: mg1cFz.exe

There was also a similar program sitting in that directory called: 0.5324038774230685.exe which may be related.
On scanning this file it looks as thought it was identified as a Trojan and was deleted.

My question is am I now infected or does it appear that my firewall/antivirus has stopped any major damage being done?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi djkemp,

:welcome:

My name is NoodleTech. I would be glad to assist you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • Please be aware that removing malware is not without risk and while unrecoverable damage to systems is rare, it can happen and may require a re-format and re-install of your operating system. Because of this it is a good idea to back-up anything important saved on your computer.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Do not delete anything unless instructed to.
  • DO NOT use tools such as ComboFix without supervision.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clean.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Failure to respond within 3 days will result in this topic being closed - If you need more time to complete the steps required, please let me know.
===================================================

That is definitely a piece of malware trying to connect to the internet and it was a good call to deny it access. I cannot say whether or not your computer has been infected at this point, but I'd like to get a closer look and remove what we find.

===================================================

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments,  attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
===================================================

Please download aswMBR.exe and save it to your desktop.

Double click aswMBR.exe to start the tool. (Vista/Windows 7 users - right click to run as administrator)

Click Scan
  • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review.
  • Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
  • You will also notice another file created on the desktop named MBR.dat.
  • Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file.
  • Attach that zipped file in your next reply as well.
Thanks NT. Please find the attached and posted information as requested. When I ran aswMBR the first time my computer blue screened so I've attached those logs for reference too. Hi DK,

I meant aswMBR.txt :).

Please do the following

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ———————————————————————————————
  • Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

    ———————————————————————————————

NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.
Ok so I forgot to save the log file first time around so this is the log from the second time it ran. Just a note, the first time it ran it obviously had different output. One thing I noticed reading through it was that it deleted a windows security database which I think may have been attached to my fingerprint reader. It doesn't matter but I just thought I'd mention it. Hope it doesn't make things harder since I forgot to save the first log. Thanks, DK
Hey DK,

The log from your first run of ComboFix still exists. Browse to C:\ and look for a file named ComboFix2.txt. Please post it. Thanks.

Ran both of those. ESET seemed to find one trojan but it may be a false positive. Hi DK,

That's not a false positive. The malware is residing within your Java cache files. This could have happened when you were browsing the net and accidentally clicked on a malicious site. Your Java version is also out of date, making you vulnerable to such infections.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 7 Update 3.
  • Click on jre-7u3-windows-i586.exe if you are running 32-bit Windows or jre-7u3-windows-x64.exe if you are running 64-bit Windows.
  • After the download completes, close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Double click the Java setup file you just downloaded and follow the prompts to begin the installation.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. [external image: Posted Image]
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings… button
  • click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave all 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
===================================================

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean.
