Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:41:01 PM, on 2/3/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) I can only run my computer in safemode to be able to get on the internet now because in regular mode a box keeps popping up with the title explorer.EXE- application error and then the description is that the memory could not be written. I havent done anything on my computer today and all of a sudden this started popping up. I dont know what to do!
It is definitely "not" a good idea to be accessing the Internet from SAFE Mode with Networking. That's because "all" of the Firewall and AntiMalware protection is disabled in SAFE Mode. If you have a second machine that you can use to follow this help thread, use it. Or perhaps you will receive sufficient suggestions below to begin the repair enough to get back on the Internet in Normal boot. This kind of error can result from "many" causes. Your XP operating system will most often report it as a "memory" fault, pointing to probable faulty physical RAM. However, it is more likely that you have installed a new software or changed the configuration of a software application that you already have. Or possibly have run afoul of some spyware. 1. You can run MemTest86 to test your Physical RAM if you do think there is a Hardware problem. 2. You can open up your machine tower case and use compressed air to clean out any dustbunnies, in case the fault is being caused by overheating. Check to be sure your fans are all running vigorously while you're in there. 3. Have you installed any new software or used software in new configuration? For instance, video editing and graphic display applications may attempt to utililize explorer.exe (Windows Explorer) to display thumbnails? 4. Boot your machine into SAFE Mode and take a look into your System Configuration Utility. Are there any new or unrecognized applications or processes running? Start - Run - (type)MSCONFIG - enter - StartUp(tab) 5. In case it's just a matter of a file or two in your Operating System getting corrupted or going missing, you can run your Windows File Protection - System File Checker Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow <——— notice the space between the "c" and "/" SFC will scan through your Operating System to identify any missing or corrupt files and will replace them from your XP installation CD if necessary, so have it handy. 6. Boot into SAFE Mode and run whatever Virus Scan and Antispyware utiliities that you already have on your machine. Allow them to clean/remove/quarantine just as you ordinarily would. Let us know if any of the above has made a difference, and then we can take further steps. Best Regards
