Last night I ran my a-squared and it detected a Trojan called Pigsearch in my Documents & Settings folder/Programs/Startup. I've tried several anti-malware programs to get rid of it but it won't go away. It's supposively quarantined but I can't tell if it really is. I won't to find a way to get it deleted and out of my system. I've tried deleting it out of a-squared but it just keeps staying in there. Can someone please look at my HJT log and tell me what you see, I'm seeing some strange stuff on this log, like files are missing. Why isn't my BOClean getting rid of it??? Or AVAST??? How do I get this out of my system? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello gidget and Welcome to TomCoyote,

STEP 1.
======
GMER
Please create a new subfolder in the Program Files folder called GMER. If you have an older version of GMER installed, you must delete it.
  • Download GMER and extract it to the C:\program files\GMER folder.
  • Please rename the GMER file
Note: You can rename gmer.exe to anything you like as long as you keep the .exe ending.
Run the Gmer.exe renamed program by double-clicking the executable file (gmer.exe) in Windows Explorer.
You may be prompted to scan immediately if GMER detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "yes" to begin the scan.
  • If you are not prompted, Click the "Rootkit" tab, then click "Scan".
DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

At the end of the scan, click "Copy" to copy the scan results to the clipboard. Then paste the results in a notepad file and also paste them back in your next reply.

Please run your A2 again and please copy the results. I need to see the complete file paths for the trojan.

Please post (reply) with the results your A2, the log from the GMER scan, and a fresh hijackthis log.
I went to a-squared's forum and other people were complaining about the same Pigsearch, turns how A2 said it was a false positive and corrected it in their updates. Should I still do what you recommended that is if you see anything else wrong in my HJT log. I await for your reply…
Actually I did not see anything in your hijackthis log. Are you experiencing any problems other than A2 supposedly detecting a trojan?
Yeah, I had some major problems with my computer about a week ago…I think it's called the SmithFraud Trojan that got in here cause upon one of my reboots my Start button dissappeared, taskbar was gone, all program files in the Start Menu were empty and when I went into Safe mode it didn't look right so what I did since I couldn't reach my backup on my other partition cause it wouldn't let me use commands, I ended up wiping my partitions with Active Kill Disk and did a clean install and added everything back…all Windows Updates and programs. Now since I switched to Comodo's Firewall I noticed an improvement, it's alot better than Look-N-Stop that I was using. Until I thought I had another malware hit me today with the so call Pigsearch, I started thinkin something else must be wrong in here if something bad keeps getting here. I went ahead and ran GMER, HJT and A2…take a look and tell me if you see anything. BTW, I renamed the GMER exe to merg.exe. Thanks!

I would remove the ADS stream–it will not hurt.

Download ADS Spy and save it to your Desktop.
- Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
- Run ADS Spy, select the "Full scan (all NTFS Drives)" option.
- Uncheck the "Ignore safe system info data streams" option.
- Uncheck the "Quick Scan" option.
- Finally, click "Scan the system for alternate data streams" button.
- If C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:C4252FE0
is found, just highlight it by clicking onto it and then clicking "Remove selected stream"
- Exit the program.

Reboot your computer.

This is just tidying up your log. Then entries are incomplete and pose no threat.
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Good Work! Your logs appear to be clean. Sorry about A2 and the false positive.

STEP 1.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 2.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.
