Hello and thanks for your help in advance.
Here is the HJT log that I just got. If you could take a look at it and tell me what I need to remove (if anything) that would be great.
My computer is an Syntax mother board with an AMD 64 1.7gig processor, 1.5 gig ram, 150 gig hard drive, DVD writer, and a A floppy drive, ATI AGP video card. I run Zone Alarm and AVG (free edition)……….Win 2000 is the OS.
The problem I am having is that the system opens the IE slowly and connects to sites slowly, even though I am on a high speed cable internet connection.

Welcome to forum, lets move HJT to its own folder.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

This does not look very good

Run this system cleaner.

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < – After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter. This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile
It may be different on Win 2000

The rest of your log looks fine, lets run the free virus scan from Panda and if all is ok I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with slow computers

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
2. A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
Since you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
Save the log someplace.
12. reboot
13. Post Panda scan results in your next reply along with a new HJT log please.
I performed the HJT saved the log:

erhmason,

Do this…

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Right click on Start and then click on Explore and navigate to C:\WINNT\system32\Tools\Restart.exe, then right click on the file and then click on Properties and let me know who or what company the file belongs to.

The rest of your log looks fine  I am just a little concerned about Restart.exe, it could be legit or it may also be bad.

Ken :D
The only information that I could obtain for the Restart.exe entry was under the Version tab: File version: 1.0.1.3 Description: Restart Conuter Copyright: Copyright© Liter Liu 2002 Under the Version tab, Language the Value reads: Chinese (Taiwan) Under the Version tab, Product Version the Value reads: 1.0.1.0 On the General tab: Location: C:\\WINNT\system32\Tools Size: 421 KB (431,616 bytes) Size on disk: 424 KB (434,176 bytes) Created: Tuesday, December 05, 2006, 4:12:36 AM Modified: Monday, December 02, 2002, 1:53:02 AM Accessed: Today, February 02, 2007, 12:34:09 AM I did notice that under the Security tab the box is checked for: Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object All Permissions are checked off
I would like you to upload this file to these two places for analysis, there quick scans and will give you a report, post both reports in your next reply. All you have to do at both sites is use the Browse feature and then Submit it.

I would say at this point that that file is ok. Lets let it be. Lets check for a Rootkit that may be hidding on your system. Run this quick scan and post the results.

Rootkit Revealer
I ran the program: Rootkit Revealer and it listed out 839 discrepencies. The problem is that when I attempt to save it so I can then copy and post it, the program creates an error and is shut down………. I did notice that there were only 3 or 4 registry items and the remaining ones looked to be of a Jpeg format…. Any ideas?
Try running it in Safemode. I really need to see the report.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

If still no luck, try this one
* Click here to download AVG Anti Rootkit and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the AVG_AntiRootkit_1.0.0.13.exe file to run it.
  • Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
  • By default it will install to "G:\Program Files\GRISOFT\AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta".
  • Click "Next" to begin the installation then click "Install".
  • It will then ask you to reboot now to finish the installation.
  • Click "Finish" and your computer will reboot.
  • After it reboots, double-click on the AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta shortcut that is now on your desktop.
  • Click on the "Perform in-depth search" button to begin the scan.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it complete.
  • When the scan is finished, click the "Save result to file" button.
  • Save the scan results to your desktop then come back here to copy and paste the results in your next reply to this thread.
Ok…….Here's what I did. I got this program to run in the Eindows environment. I ran it 3 times, just to make sure I would get the same data each and every time. I didn't. It started off getting 839 listings, then went to 329 listings, and the final which is the post of three listings: HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\SAC* 12/5/2006 3:57 AM 0 bytes Key name contains embedded nulls (*) HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\SAI* 12/5/2006 3:57 AM 0 bytes Key name contains embedded nulls (*) HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\XATM:1c5716b6-28f3-4dfd-bf69-d1489ad115c7* 12/5/2006 3:39 AM 0 bytes Key name contains embedded nulls (*)
erhmason :D

The entries Rootkit Revealer found where normal, nothing wrong there. The rest of the scans looked ok as does your HJT log. This may be a problem on your ISPs end.
