Hi tom.

You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP and are, thus, wide open to infections. It is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a immediately, so that we are not wasting our time. You can get SP1a here. You will also need to get SP2, but NOT NOW, only after we are sure that your machine is clean.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install. Make sure that Run fixit is checked and then click Finish. The fix will begin - follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so (your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal).

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Next, click on Start, then Run, type cmd and click OK. A command prompt (black window) will open.
Type ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)
Hit the Enter key, type exit then hit Enter again.

Now lets check some settings on your system.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double-click on Network Connections.
Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, and left-click on Properties. Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
{*]Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the FixWareout logfile (C:\fixwareout\report.txt), as a reply to this thread.
my xp pro version is not legit, gates has blocked me from updates. I am trying to reinstall original cicero xp home windows disk (Legit!). Things are slow and many crashes, hope to get to this soon if i am succesful Thanks
Hi tom. I cannot help you unless you have a legal copy of Windows installed. Presumably you will be reformatting before installing (I don't think that you can install XP Home over XP Professional). This will mean that any malware will be removed. Make sure that you scan any files before restoring them from your backup. I will close this thread. If you still have problems once you have re-installed Windows, please start a new thread and post a HijackThis log.
