Hi, I have the hijacker that redirects all my internet searches to a porno site (safe search redir). I have done everything listed in the Major Geeks support forum, that is, downloaded and run all the antivirus programs and done all of the scans, but the problem persists. I have run HiJackThis and have the scan report but don't know what to eliminate. Please help me! There are 2 important things I would ask you to bear in mind: I) I am not a computer wizard. 2) I am not sending you this from my infected computer because I can't navigate, I always end up at the same porno site. Thank you
Can you get your Hijack This! log file to this computer and post in into this thread? One way to accomplish that would be this. 1. Insert a floppy disk into the drive of the infected computer. 2. Make a Hijack This! log file. 3. Navigate to the log file "hijackthis.log", on it and choose "Send to", then "3-1/2 A:" 4. Remove the floppy from the infected machine and take it to a PC you can use. 5. On the "working" PC, on "My Computer" then "3-1/2 A:" then on "hijackthis.log". If the PC wants to know what program to use to open this type of file with, select "Notepad". 6. In the Notepad window, and choose "Select all". again and select "Copy". Now the log file is in the "copy/paste" buffer. 7. Log onto the forum, reply to this thread. In the "reply window", and choose "paste". The log should then appear in the "reply" box. 8. Click "Add Reply". There's not much we can do until we have a peek at the log file… I love a challenge…. ;)

You do have a few "bugs" in the system.

At least one of them is a KEYLOGGER!!!

Others are information stealers.

So it's safe to assume that any confidential info stored on the PC or typed on the keyboard (PIN numbers, passwords, etc.) since their arrival may have been compromised.

Take whatever steps you feel necessary to mitigate any possible losses brought about by this loss of system security after we have cleaned your system.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Now, push these 3 keys at the same time:

The task manager appears on the screen.

Click on the Processes tab, then on Image name to sort them alphabetically.

Find these in the list of processes:

1234abcd.exe
dxvid.exe

on them and choose End process.

If they appear more than once, "end" all of them.

Close the task manager.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode (<– click to learn how to boot in "safe mode").

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\system32\1234abcd.exe <— file

c:\windows\system32\dxvid.exe <— file

c:\windows\system32\ftrzpcwvvgebb.exe <— file

lsac.exe <— file

smsc.exe <— file

wkssvr.exe <— file

The last three will probably be in the "C:\Windows" or "C:\Windows\Syste32" folder.

Be certain the files you delete match the names I have given EXACTLY!!!

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files (<– click to learn how to show "hidden" files) when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Hi Micah.

Thanks for your prompt reply yesterday. I did what you told me to do, the only files I found and deleted were DXVID.EXE and 1234abcd.exe. I couldn't find the others that you listed. Here is the new HJT log:

The log seems to be good (I'll check it more thoroughly this evening and post if I find anything).

How are things working?

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Hi again Micah, I can't tell you how things are going when I go online, because I am terrified to try it until I've read over what you just sent me and make sure that I am protected first. One thing I can tell you though is that my pc is extremely sluggish. It takes about 3 minutes from the time I turn it on just to be ready to where I can move the cursor and it's not closing right. When I attempt to turn it off I have to ""end now". Can you help me fix that? You did say that you love a challenge! Thanks : :weee:
Things to try to help "sluggishness":

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from Spybot Search and Destroy
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from Lavasoft
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Try this online virus scan:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let it remove any infections found.

Reboot.

Another way to help free up resources is to navigate to this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\prefetch <– folder

Then, delete all the files in that folder.

DO NOT DELETE THE FOLDER!!

Just delete all the files in the folder.

Read about it here:

Windows prefetch

Let me know if this helps.

When I attempt to turn it off I have to ""end now".

Do you have the name of the file/program that you have to "end now"?
Hi Micah, The problem with my internet explorer seems to be taken care of, that is, I am no longer redirected to that porno site or any other site, I can navigate okay. I have done everything you advised me to do. At one point, at the prompt of Spybot (marked in red and checkmarked) I erased these three files: WindowsSecurity CenterAntivVirusDisableNotify WindowsSecurityCenter AntiVirusOverride WindowsSecurityCenterFirewallDisableNotify I hope that was the right thing to do. The only problem I have now, which is significant, is that Windows takes forever to open (about 5 minutes) and forever (about 2 minutes) to close. As it is closing I get a message from Windows saying "Ënding Program" (It actually says "Finalizando Programa" because my Windows is in Spanish) and something about "ccApp"'. Also, when I deleted all the files (not the folder) from the prefetch folder, I got a message saying that "ccApp"could not be found and asked me if I wanted to open it using the Web or a program to open it, but I didn't do anything at that point because I didn't know what to do or what program to pick. I hope that in all my cleaning and fixing I didn't inadvertedly erase an important file. Can you help me get my PC back to its old speed? I appreciate all your help!
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Archivos de programa\Archivos comunes\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"

ccApp.exe is part of your Antivirus.

Can you check to see if the file still exists?

No, you haven't accidentally deleted something (as far as I can tell).
:)

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Archivos de programa\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O23 - Service: Win32 USB2 Driver (Microsoft Config) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\smsc.exe" -netsvcs (file missing)

O23 - Service: Network Client Monitor - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvchost.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: Network Client-Server (nwclntserv) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\srvss.exe (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot.

About the only thing else I can suggest to check for things slowing the machine down woud be Ewido Security Suite.

If you want to give it a try, do this:

Click here to download Ewido security suite - it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

After the definitions have been updated, close Ewido.

Do NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Now, run Ewido, then:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin (do not open any folder's or open the windows control panel while the scan is in progress).
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report.txt file to your desktop.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file, and the report.txt file from the Ewido scan, into this thread. :)
Hi Micah,

I did everything you indicated. Things have improved a little, but not much, in regard to speed. I have the suspicion that the Norton virus and internet protection could be causing it. Or perhaps just the fact that I have about 8 different forms of protection loaded up (Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware, Norton, Ewido, Spywareblaster, Ad Aware SE, CCCleaner and then some) What do you think of that possibility? Do you think I should unistall any of them? I am posting the most recent HJT log but can't post the Ewido log because when I scanned, no infections were detected, therefore no report was produced. So here's the HJT log:

Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware, Norton, Ewido, Spywareblaster, Ad Aware SE, CCCleaner

You can uninstall Ewido.

Out of the others in the list, you've only got 3 "active" all the time (after uninstalling Ewido):

Norton
Microsoft Antispyware
Spybot

I wouldn't think that combination would be enough to slow things down a lot.

It's the programs that are active all the time that are going to bog you down. The others (like Adaware, CCCleaner) are "run in demand" (you only run them when you want to) aren't responsible for sluggishness.

Have you defragmented your C: drive recently?

That may speed things a bit.

To do that, go to:

Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Disk Defragmenter

Other than that, the only other thing I can think of would be to start removing the "optional" programs you have running.
