Hi there,

In the last week, I downloaded a few trial programs for DV editing/dvd burning and I think I got more than I asked for. My computer is running really slowly; the CPU usage has been btwn 60-90% the last two days when I don't have any programs open.

Also, it shuts off at some point during the night, even though I had it set to "always on" with an error message when I restarted (I think it said something about a "fatal error" although I did not write it down). Sorry I can't be more specific or helpful with that.

Here's my log, I hope you can help.

Thanks,
Kirsten

Hi, The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread. Then I'll take a look. Regards, Rosty.
I just ran a new HJT log below.
My CPU usage is still really high (79-90%) when no windows are open.
I read and followed the steps on the pinned threads for a slow running computer and it did not help.
Rps.exe is using 30,228 K. I have no idea what Rps.exe belongs too, either.
Help!
And Thanks.

Hi Duck Duck Goose,

I have no idea what Rps.exe belongs too..

This one belongs to Verizon Internet Security Suite.
You can read more about it here and here.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):
Weatherbugand/or AWS - this a program that sits in your System Tray (next to the clock) and delivers the weather. It used to come with spyware, and whilst the latest version is spyware free, it is an advertisment-supported program which many users find annoying.

Download ATF Cleaner.
Do not run it yet, we will shortly.

Please open HijackThis and click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries(if present):

O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

Close all others windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please delete these folder using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\Program Files\AWS\ <== folder (only if you decided to fix the optional above)

Now run ATF-Cleaner:
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Rosty.
Rosty,
It's running faster; CPU usage is btwn 45-60%. I tried out a few programs I had been having trouble w/ (like Word) and it's not getting stuck for a while like it did before. :)

Hi Duck Duck Goose,
thanks for the new log.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this.

No problem, I'll do it with pleasure. :)

Your log looks clean.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide.

Post back here and let me know how it went. Include a new HJT log just to be safe.

Regards,

Rosty.
