Dear All,

I submitted a post several weeks ago and paid a small sum of $50.00, but I still did not hear from anyone.

I finally took the plunge and autoclaved my hard drive, reinstalled my programs, but alas, I still have a 40% decrease in speed. No other problems regarding bootup or shutdown are present fortunately.

I am posting my latest log for any advice and help. Thank you kindly for your support!

Steve

Hi Steve, I would first always suggest you get your product before you pay for it. Now it looks for the life of me like you are running both Symantec and Trend Micro…multiple antivirus software. If this is the case you really need to choose one product and maintain it properly and uninstall the other from your computer. The conflicts between programs can acutally make you less safe then running one good product and updating and running it often. I do also see a few things that could be removed but they are basically clutter and nothing to be concerned about. You HJT.exe is outdated, we are currently reading logs from version 1.99.1. You can update from within the software like this: Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions. Take care of the issue of competing AV programs, two big programs like this competing can really slow you down, and update your HJT log and post a fresh log when this is done and I will take another look. Thanks…pskelley
Hi PSKelley,

Thank you kindly for taking the time to read my Hijack This Log Files.

As you requested, I am enclosing a new log file below.

I also checked the Norten SystemWorks Program. I have not used it too often, but it is more a management program with Norten Ghost, Password manager, Registry checker, Web Tools, etc. It is not really an anti-viral scanner. However, if you think I should still uninstall it, I will gladly do so….

Since I sent my letter to Tom Coyote, I have been also reading the forums of fixed logs. Recently, I ran Etrust, Trend Micro, and Panda, but they could not find any viruses. I update my Adaware, Spybot, SpySweeper programs often.

I have also deleted my Temp files, and Temp Folders as well which helped. (I do not know how often to do this though.)

I also noticed I have two files named C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe and several files of C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe .
Do you think I should delete the extra ones?…

Thank you again for your help. I really appreciate it!

Sincerely yours,

Steve

Hi Steve, boy it sure looked like two competing AV systems, classic reason for a system slowdown also. No, if you know it is not interfering with Trend Micro, I would not remove it if it is adding to your security. You might call or email Trend and mention the product and ask them is there any reason for concern.

Next I just want to ask, because I have found this to be true in many cases, could this slowdown coincide with the SP2 download. If there is any possibility of this, you would want to review this information: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe = http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…brary/ati2evxx/
Description:
ati2evxx.exe is the ATI External Event Utility for your ATI display drivers. It manages the ATI Hotkey feature. This process can be removed to free up resources without comprimising system performance. A couple more opinions:
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-265.html
http://file.net/process/ati2evxx.exe.html
Review the information and you should be able to make this call. This item is not malware.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe = Description:
svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated. Review this information: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056. To recap, leave that item alone.

I have also deleted my Temp files, and Temp Folders as well which helped. (I do not know how often to do this though

.
Here is information to help you understand this better. We also have a Prefetch folder that should be cleaned. I will include information about it also.

Here is the freeware utility I use on my computers for your consideration. If you download, read the download page first so you will know how to use it. The default setting will work, as you learn the tool you can modify to suit your needs: http://www.ccleaner.com/

I would also like to mention that you do have a lot of spyware programs and I can not say how this would effect your speed. You have SpywareGuard and Spybot which I use but also running is Spy Sweeper and Microsoft AntiSpyware. You might use MSCONFIG to turn off one or more at a time to see if this abundance of spyware programs is slowing you down.

Your HJT.exe in the first log was running from F:\. In this new log you are running it from a .zip file in a Temp Directory. HJT.exe needs to be in a permanent folder to store logs and backups for safety. The information in this link will show you how to do this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html Once HJT is properly positioned, make sure any instance not in the folder is deleted.

You have two items that can be removed with HJT, but you have programs mentioned earlier that must be turned off or they will block the HJT fix. If you wish to remove these items which appear as clutter, you will need to do this:

Turn off TeaTimer: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm
Turn off Microsoft AntiSpyware
To disable the program, follow the instructions below:
1.) Right click on the Microsoft Antispyware tray icon (a little red and yellow circle looking thing)
2.) Click on Security Agents Status (Enabled)
3.) Click on Disable Real-time Protection.
Turn off SpywardGuard: For spywareGuard right click will open the program, exit from the menu and confirm that you wish to shut it down.
Turn off Spy Sweeper, You will have to check the instructions for turning this off.

Open Hijack this and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

You can remove this next one if you do not want that as your StartPage

***you may also check any remove any DPF (016) line you do not know or know you are done with. If you remove something in error, the next time you visit the site you will be prompted to download it again. I hope this information helps.

At this point I would suggest you run CCleaner then restart the computer and post a new log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Since you have no malware in your log, posting again is optional.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
