For the past 3 weeks, my computer has become very slow. The home page of the Explorer has tried to be changed from something, but my system did not allow it the happen. Also, the past few days has seen the computer reboot itself without asking.

Thanks in advance for your help. Attached is the HiJackThis log file.

Hi.

Your HijackThis log appears to be clean. There are, however, some issues that we need to sort out.

————————————————————

Firewalls

You have two firewalls running - McAfee and Sygate. This is probably causing your problem, as using more than one can cause all sorts of conflicts. You need to uninstall one of these. It's up to you which one, but I would keep Sygate. Reboot your computer after uninstalling.

I am assuming that your Norton/Symantec software does not include a firewall. Please check that this assumption is correct.

———————————————————

Uninstall MS-JVM

The Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MS-JVM) is installed on the computer. This is a security risk and we need to remove it and install Sun's Java in its place. If you have any problems with this, or if you have any questions, then stop and let me know.

1. Click on Start then Run. Copy/paste the following into the Run: text box:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

2. Click the OK button.

3. You will see a confirmation prompt which says "If this component is uninstalled, Microsoft Internet Explorer will not be able to download files from the World Wide Web. Do you want to uninstall the MicrosoftVM?". Don't worry about this message!

4. Click the Yes button to start the uninstall process of the MS-JVM.

Windows will uninstall the files and then give you a prompt asking whether or not you want to restart the computer. You should press the Yes button to allow it to do so.

When the computer has restarted, click on Start then My Computer, find the following files and folders (highlighted in red) and delete them, if present. Please let me know if there are any problems with this.

c:\windows\inf\java.pnf <- File only
c:\windows\java <- Folder
c:\windows\system32\wjview.exe <- File only
c:\windows\system32\jview.exe <- File only

  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad
  • Make sure that Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad - (click the Format menu and uncheck Word Wrap)
  • Click Save As on the File menu and name the file fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • Save the file on your desktop
  • Close Notepad and make sure that all other windows are closed

Again, thanks for the help….!

krbybng
Hi krbybng.

I see that you have uninstalled McAfee and retained Sygate firewall. Please could you check that the Sygate firewall is running.

We need to 'fix' some lines in your HijackThis log, but first we need to disable SpywareGuard. This is a good program but could interfere with the fix. Right click the running icon of Spywareguard in the system tray to open the program. Then go to Menu, File, and choose Exit. It will automatically restart at next boot. Please also check the settings for AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Click the Shield icon at the top.
  • Under Resident shield is… make sure that this shows as inactive or not available in the free version.
  • Change it, if necessary.
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan.

———————————————

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (please let me know if any are missing):

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [DELDIR0.EXE] "C:\DOCUME~1\Bill\LOCALS~1\Temp\DELDIR0.EXE" "C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Firewall\"
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

Click on Start then My Computer, find the following folder (highlighted in red) and delete them, if present. Please let me know if there are any problems with this.

C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Firewall\

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click the Accept button
  • Follow the prompts to download and install the ActiveX component(s) and other software
    • If a yellow information bar appears at the top of the browser window, click on it and select Install ActiveX Control
    • If a message box appears, click on OK or Run as appropriate
  • Click Accept again (see the note below if using IE7)
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as… button:
  • Save the report to your desktop (Save as type: Text document (txt))
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Questions
  • Is your Sygate firewall running?
  • Were any of the lines in the HijackThis 'fix' missing?
  • Were there any problems deleting the McAfee Firewall folder?
  • How is your computer running - are you still having the same problems?
—————————————–

Please post:
  • The answers to my questions
  • The Kaspersky report
  • A new HijackThis log
beynac

Is your Sygate firewall running? YES
Were any of the lines in the HijackThis 'fix' missing? NO
Were there any problems deleting the McAfee Firewall folder? NO
How is your computer running - are you still having the same problems? Seems better, but still takes forever to boot.

Hi.

Everything's looking good! :)

The items in the Kaspersky report are all in your System Restore points. As your computer is clean, it would be a good idea to flush the restore points.

Flush System Restore

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
This will create a new, clean Restore Point.

How is your computer running - are you still having the same problems? Seems better, but still takes forever to boot.

There's not much in your startup that should slow your computer down to any great extent, except your Norton AntiVirus which is known to cause slow startups and shutdowns. The following are what we call "Optional Fixes" where people are concerned about their system resources. Uninstalling/fixing some, or all, of the following startup programs may improve your bootup time.

WeatherBug

You may want to consider uninstalling WeatherBug (if you have the free version).

WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies (weatherbugmedia.com). There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is ‘spyware’, and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers. However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. This makes it ‘unsolicited’, and since it is installed to raise money for its creators through the built-in ads it is certainly ‘commercial’. So it does meet the definition for ‘parasite’: unsolicited commercial software. It is nonetheless listed as a borderline case because it is not overtly harmful and many people do install it deliberately. WeatherBug bundles the MySearch parasite in its standalone distribution and has in the past, installed Gator and SVAPlayer.

If you choose to uninstall WeatherBug, here are a couple of alternatives:To uninstall WeatherBug:
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight WeatherBug, click Remove.
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
  • Reboot your computer.
Real Player Auto-update

This is RealPlayer's autoupdate program and is not necessary for the program to function properly. It is considered to be a resource hog. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself.. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

QuickTime

This is QuickTime's system tray icon and not necessary for the program to function properly. It is considered to be a resource hog. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in QuickTime Player itself to keep it from resetting itself.. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Adobe

You have various processes being run for this.

You have Adobe Gamma Loader.exe running at Startup. Adobe Gamma Loader.exe is installed alongside Adobe Creative Studio products and allows the color calibration of your video output device. This is a non-essential process. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis. These are the items to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

You have reader_sl.exe running at Startup. This is a process associated with the Adobe Reader. It is used to decrease the load time for the reader when a PDF document is selected. This is a non-essential process. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

——————————————————

It is your choice whether, or not, you remove any of these from startup. My personal opinion is that any gain would be fairly small. If you want to reinstate anything, you can use HijackThis to replace the entry. Open HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools section.., click on the Backups button, tick the items you want to restore and click on the Restore button (top right).

I hope that you have found this helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions.
