My wife's computer is working ok offline but when online it is uploading something and we cannot get any web pages to download or updates for programs. At the same time that the computer is uploading it is also downloading a smaller (about 25 percent) amount of stuff. We are on dialup. The computer is running XP pro and we use AVG, spybot, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Sware SE, a-squared, and are unable to update any of them. System restore worked once and we were able to update AVG and it found and repaired many (40?) trogens. System resore will not work now. But the uploading to the internet problem returned with in a day. No firewall. Logfile below. Will appreciate your help. If I have forgotten any information you need please ask, Thank You.

Hello Ian1955, We are currently studying your log and will be back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience. Regards, Rosty.
Hi Ian1955, and welcome to TomCoyoteForum.
My name is Rosty and I'm going to help you with your log.

I'm afraid that I have some bad news concerning your computer - you have become infected with Backdoor.Win32.Bifrose.aat!
Here is a quick type description of this infection:

Malware ("malicious software") consists of software with clearly malicious, hostile, or harmful functionality or behavior and that is used to compromise and endanger individual PCs as well as entire networks.

And a quick catogory description:

A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the rootkit has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Regards,

Rosty.
Hi Rosty

Password problem taken care of. Need to clean computer for now, its main function is my wifes email lists and some web browsing. Also family photos. Will need to save a lot of info on it. For now if we can clean it that will give us time to get ready to do a reload. Remember we are on dial up so any programs that need to be installed need to be downloaded by and transfered from my computer (Win98) by floppie disk to her computer (XP Pro). Also I can only work on this late at night so don't wory about the time delay.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Ian1955,

Please install an firewall first, because it doesn't make any sense to remove malware from your system if no scanner is preventing them from reinfecting your computer.

Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over:
Kerio Personal Firewall OR ZoneAlarm are good FREE firewalls.

Read Understanding and using firewalls to learn more about using firewalls

VERY IMPORTANT: Never install more than ONE firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease their reliability and effectiveness!
Note: if you have disabled the windows firewall I suggest that you reinable it, in that way you don't have to download an other one.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition

Hi Rosty

Thank you for the information, however

1. I cannot down load with my wifes computer, The computer is uploading and using up all of the dialup bandwith and I cannot get even a simple webpage to load.

2. I can down load with my computer BUT can only transfer with floppies. How do I transfer a 13M program file to my wifes computer with 1.4M floppies???

3. If there is a way to do this I still will not be able to update the program after instaled.

4. I found on the internet how to turn on the Internet Connection Firewall but it has not stoped the upload. Even though I configured it to only allow email conictions.

6. Can we skip all of these programs for now and disable the problem so that I can use the internet to down load the programs???

7. Other suggestions?

I am sure we will get this figgured out. :)

Thank You
Ian

O23 - Service: icrss manager 32bit (icrss) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system\icrss.exe

I placed check beside 020****, 023**** was not present,
You do not say if I should do something befor rebooting computer.

Please reboot your system and download, install and run the programs that I asked you to do in my previous post.

At this point most internet activity gone, able to use internet.
Downloaded and installed Zonealarm, seems to be working.
Downloaded and installed AVG Anti-Spyware, instaled and
updated it. PROBLEM near the end of auto update the computer
freezes up, could not find any way to unfreeze, after an hour I
turned off computer, tried update again with same results.
So now I have half of the stuff removed and half of the programs
instaled, I will try and unstall and reinstall AVGAS tonight.
Any other suggestions??? New HiJack This log posted.
If I cannot get AVGAS to run I all ready have Spybot,
SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware SE, a-squared, all free versins.
Other suggestions???? I do like AVGAS if I can get it to work.

Hi Ian1955,

At this point most internet activity gone, able to use internet.
Downloaded and installed Zonealarm, seems to be working.

Good to hear.:)

You do not say if I should do something befor rebooting computer.

Dang, forgot to teel you to click on the Fix Checked button.:(

I will try and unstall and reinstall AVGAS tonight.

Please follow my advise below.

Next, launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the BOLD REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\rpcc.dll]

On the desktop, doubleclick fix.reg and allow it to run. Let it merge.

Please open HijackThis and click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\System32\rpcc.dll
Please close all other Windows and browsers, except HijackThis and click Fix Checked. Exit Hijackthis.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:

Show Hidden Files and Folders

[*]Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting

your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

Please delete these files/folders using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rpcc.dll <– file

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
[*]Lauch AVG Anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.

[*]Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab

then click on "Complete System Scan".
[*]ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little

time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
[*]If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all

actions"
[*]Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.

[*]Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the

screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
you saved that file, this is important).
[*]Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

Post a new HijackThis log, togheter with the AVG Anti-Spywarelog in your next reply using the add reply button.

Regards,

Rosty.
Hi Rosty

Have had some success. I forgot to turn windows firewall off when I installed Zonealarm, turned it off and was able to down load the AVGAS update. Cycled computer through restart and Zonealrm ran a scan, found -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\rpcc.dll
and put it in quarantine. Then I ran AVGAS and removed approximately. 12 different baddies a total of 53 copies. I did not do the regedit as it seemed to be the same thing Zonealarm had already done. My scan of Hijack this showed entry 020*** gone. Went to safe mode and ran AVGAS and removed one more baddie. Will post all of the logs below.

I notice that the last entry in the first AVGAS does not say quarantined, is it taken care of??

Thank You for your help. :D
Ian
