Switched from dialup to broadband. Now all sorts of things are happening, & I can't get on to the internet. I'm posting this through another computer using a dialup. Can someone check the logfile for any anomalies, please?

Hi fumanchu and welcome to TomCoyote's forums :wavey:

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt
Thanks for the reply. It may be several days before i can get back to my problem computer but I will post back when I have done the fix. Again many thanks. Fumanchu
Hi Blade01,
Sorry about the delay in getting back. Here's the results of the fix:

No problem fumanchu :)

First I have to ask have you run Smitfraudfix on your computer? On your previous log was this O2 - BHO: (no name) - {a43385f0-7113-496d-96d7-b9b550e3fcca} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ixt0.dll entry which is a sign of Smitfraud.

Then to fix..

To make the fix work we have to temporarily disable some realtime protectors.

Disable SpySweeper's realtime protection.
  • Open Spysweeper and click on Options
  • Choose Program Options and uncheck "load at windows
    startup
    ".
  • On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything.
  • Uncheck "home page shield".
  • Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
  • Exit the program.

Disable WinPatrol's realtime protection.
  • Right-click the running icon of Winpatrol in the system tray
  • Choose exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.

Start hijackthis, click do a system scan only, check:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{9EDB3061-19E4-4849-9AC7-E2A7682E3D0E}: NameServer = 85.255.113.148,85.255.112.86

Close all other windows and click fix checked.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Only for Windows XP and Windows 2000

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

[external image: Posted Image]

______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

[external image: Posted Image]

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:
C:\rapport.txt & a new hjt log.
It's terrible how life gets in the way sometimes. Little things like 'need for sleep' and 'doctors appointments' have stopped me doing this sooner. My apologies. Maybe now I can concentrate on this thing. Here's the new HJT logfile & rapport.txt

regards Fumanchu

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

First download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    * Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    * Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    * Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop. Don't run it yet.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

AVG Anti-Spyware is not same as AVG virus protection software. Actually a couple of days ago it was known as Ewido Anti-Spyware. I strongly recommend you to get and do scan with it as I instructed in my previous post.
Hi Blade81, Yes you are correct. The AVG Anti-Spyware is not the same. My mistake. However, on downloading it & running it (after some considerable difficulty which I'll explain ) I got a clean bill of health for the infected machine, as I had expected. Here's the logfile… ——————————————————— AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report ——————————————————— + Created at: 9:07:55 AM 6/10/2006 + Scan result: Nothing found. ::Report end What I am about to say, I hope you don't take any offence to, as it is a constructive 'heads-up' for you and anyone else involved in fighting malware, and those who make the programs and procedures to do same. I mean no disrespect. This AVG Anti-Spyware program, and indeed your policy of repairing malware, relies very heavily on being able to connect to the internet. I find that very strange, as the original post stated that the suspect machine was NOT able to do so. Further, standard procedure in the real world, when a machine is suspected of a security risk situation, is to isolate it completely from all other connections until the problem is resolved. This prevents the spread of the problem. All downloads for this operation have been carried out on a known clean machine. The files/software have been transferred to the suspect machine via a portable memory stick. There is no direct connection from the suspect machine to any other machine or to the internet. It has been isolated completely. So talking with you, and downloading the fixes and uploading the reports went relatively smoothly. Now to the difficulty. You recommended that the AVG Anti-Spyware be updated once installed. This is NOT POSSIBLE by ordinary means as there is no connection to the internet on that machine! Further, although the software does have a button for manual update, the program's algorithyms still insist on automatically connecting to the download site, which of course fails! Now after thinking about this situation for a while, and inspecting the program to determine just what it was trying to download (not easy as the free software has no helpfiles), I decided to install it on the KNOWN CLEAN machine and do the update from that. This downloaded a couple of .dat files. I then transferred those files to the Signatures folder of the infected machine via memory stick. So in that manner the update was completed. This procedure would have been entirely unnecessary if the updates were available on a website for manual download and installation, and the AVG software configured to accept the MANUAL input of a .dat file. Recommendations: Please be mindful that standard procedure in a security risk situation is to isolate the suspected machine. Formulating procedures to accomodate this situation is highly desirable. Please allow for the fact that not everyone leaves an infected machine connected to the 'net, nor may they even be able to do so (as was my case). Procedures for cleaning need to take this into consideration. Please remind Software/anti-malware programmers they need to make provision in their products for manual updating via a manually-downloaded and manually-installed data file. Conclusion: I am very pleased to have had your help in pinpointing the problem and providing the necessary fixes. I was able to fix the infected machine and bring it back online. As a computer technician, I was able to find a workaround for the 'no internet' & 'no update capability' scenario. However, I dread to think what would have happened had I been a complete novice to computers. Again, thanks for your help and patience. Hopefully my constructive critique from an end-users viewpoint will be some small repayment for you and the industry in general. Fumanchu
Thanks for your feedback. It just makes me wonder why you didn't dare to download those little updates while you've been using Windows with only SP1 installed. Using broadband connection with only SP1 installed Windows and without any firewall is a suicide. If you don't install SP2, the last update you'll be getting from Microsoft is next week, on "patch Tuesday". That's because Microsoft's support for SP1 and SP1a ends on 10th of October 2006.

Anyway, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

If the service pack 2 download is too large, you can get a FREE copy on cd from microsoft here

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
The program is available for download here
  • Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
Spybot can be downloaded at this location
  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
  • Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here
    Download it here
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Keep Anti Virus Software updated - It is imperative that you have Anti virus software and that you update it at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system… problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade
Thanks for your feedback. It just makes me wonder why you didn't dare to download those little updates while you've been using Windows with only SP1 installed. Using broadband connection with only SP1 installed Windows and without any firewall is a suicide. If you don't install SP2, the last update you'll be getting from Microsoft is next week, on "patch Tuesday". That's because Microsoft's support for SP1 and SP1a ends on 10th of October 2006. I understand what you may be thinking (piracy etc.), but there are many reasons why this situation came about. This computer (which runs Windows XP Pro) resides in a remote corner of northern Australia, where the only internet availability until recently has been 28.8 kb dialup via twisted pair copper landline. This setup was at best unreliable, with frequent dropouts, thunderstorms etc. It's a PITA to get 80% of a large overnight download and then have it drop. Hence the updates were turned off. I have many more important things to do than be a slave to the computer for hours at a time. Now that broadband has become a reality in this part of the world, that's the reason I got connected. But before I could do very much about updating the OS or software (the big stuff, not the small things like AVG), the machine became infected, even though I run the Windows firewall, AVG (paid), Winpatrol (last line of defense), and several other popup blockers and a hosts file from MVPS, and the broadband provider (Westnet) assured me that the router was firewalled. So that's why I came to you guys. I've got enough sense to run a HJT when necessary, and ask someone familiar with it to do an appraisal. Thanks for the 'heads-up' on the "patch Tuesday" thing. I'm in the process of updating as we speak, now that I can connect once again with broadband. I'll take your advice and make a few changes re securing the machine against future intrusions (can we ever be truly secure without dumping Windows & going to unix?) regards Fumanchu ps My observations about too much reliance on downloading in a security breach situation still stand.
