Hello,

I have possible Hijack problem.

On msn messenger i got a virus from someone online. First it changed my homepage to virushelpzone.com or something and whenever i changed it back to the normal one, the next time it would just go back to it. Then it started emailing everyone on my list the same link that i got.

When i open windows explorer, it shuts off almost right way.

i have used updated spybot, symantec virus scan. and i also ran stinger (found one Trojan) but none of them helped.

After several tries I was able to run hijackthis. The Hijack log file is enclosed. If you need virus scan or Stinger log files, I have them.

Please, help!

HeLuna

Hello,

Thanks for the speedy answer.

The Hijack this did not stay open long enough for me to delete the entries,so I logged in as a safemode and tried to do it here. I got some but not all of them were there. I changed IE main start page entry in Registry Editor.

Otherwise I did as told, except I ran Hijack again before HOster to get rid of all the 01 entries.

Here are my log files:

::Report end

On the positive note, the windows update dialog box came up that I need to install updates…

So, is there anything else I need to do?

Thank you very much

HeLuna
Good Morning, :D

Log looks good

You can remove this if you don't use it.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you do an Online installation, it will install automatically.
  • If you do an Offline installation, you will have to save the setup file to your hard disk and run it. Your call.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to do an Offline Installation and save the setup file in case I need it in the future

Run this free online virus scanner from Panda, it may pick up some bad entires that are not showing up on your HJT log. It's important that I see the log so copy and paste it into your next reply.

Good Morning HeLuna

Trj/Qhost.gen <– This is the virus that changed all your hosts files and was capable of directing you to anyplace they wanted to. It looks like its gone.

Regcleaner32 contains Spyware although its not malicious. I would recommend uninstalling it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

You can run this other cleaner that will clean up your system real well along with removing entries in the registry that can clog you up.

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < – After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter. This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile

Thank you so much for all of your help!! my computer thanks you too…

HeLuna
This line could be a problem.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [csrss] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

It should read
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTuneshelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

Do you use iTunes ?

If not than remove that entry with HJT.
HeLuna

Go ahead and remove this entry with HJT, you can always restore it if it causes you a problem.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [csrss] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

To restore the backups:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on "View the list of Backups"
  • Place a check mark next to anything you want to restore
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
Let me know how things are running now
Yup! everythings running really smoothly!! i actually had that itunes helper thing in there twice - the 'wrong' way and the right way, so i deleted the one that you told me to and i tunes still worked!! thank you so much for helping me with my computer, its very appreciated!! -HeLuna

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
