Abnormal Internet Traffic

I recently began experiencing abnormal internet traffic when opening web pages, meaning the Zone Alarm indicator would show traffic continuing for 20 - 60 seconds after clicking on the address bar "go to" button and this would be accompanied by a repetitive audible clicking every 5 - 10 seconds. Normal would be for internet traffic to run 10 seconds max with a single audible.

I started my own troubleshooting by checking "Show hidden files and folders" and unchecking "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files", then running CCleaner followed by the following steps:

1. Ran the following anti-spyware/virus scans in the normal mode with no infections found: Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, AVG Anti-Spyware and AVG Anti-Virus.

2. Ran the following online scans in the normal mode, again with no infections found: Panda Activescan, McAfee Freescan and Bit Defender Online Scan.

3. Ran the following resident scans in the safe mode, again with no infections found: Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, AVG Anti-Spyware, SUPERAntiSpyware and AVG Anti-Virus.

4. Ran Spyware Doctor in the safe mode with the following infections detected:
{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}
{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}#
{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}\iexplore
{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}\iexplore#
{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}\iexplore#Count
{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}\iexplore#Time
{549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3}\iexplore#Type

5. Ran HJT in the safe mode with none of the items in number 4 detected.

6. Ran Spyware Doctor in the safe mode again with the items in number 4 detected and "fixed". NOTE: Repetitive audible subsided, but abnormal internet traffic continues.

7. Ran HJT in the safe mode again and log is posted below. It looks as though there are at least some "09 (no name) (file missing)" issues and perhaps more. Please advise further action to be taken. Thank you.

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

I see nothing bad on your log, lets do a few things.

Run AVG in Safemode and post the report.

Then run HJT in Normal mode and post a new log.
Ken,

Thanks for your time and effort. I have run both AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Spyware in the safe mode and HJT in the normal mode. The logs follow.

Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

They are both legitimate windows files but they may have been changed by malware, go to each file and right click on it, then click on Properties > Version and see when the files where written and what company they are related to.

Both those files are fine, they changed when you upgraded to SP2.

Your Java is up to date but you need to go into the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions before Update 10.

These are orphaned registry entries for malware you had on your system, the malware appears gone but left these behind. Run Spyware Doctor again and see if it removed them.

Lets run Blacklight to see if it shows something

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

I have both those files on both my home and work PC and the date and version numbers are identical to yours so I would say they are ok.

Everything seems to be coming up OK, lets run Panda , it is very good at detecting things that may not be showing up on your log.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
2. A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
Since you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
Save the log someplace.
12. reboot
13. Post Panda scan results in your next reply along with a new HJT log.

Ran Panda ActiveScan, then rebooted. Note: The Panda progress window showed scan progress through to completion and also showed no infections detected for the categories specified. However, I could not find options or buttons for "see report" or "save report". If I just missed them someplace, let me know and I'll run the scan again.

Your log looks good  I would have liked to see the Panda report, if your up to it, run it again and post the report. You will have that option at the end of the scan.

Zone Alarm indicator <– Mine has constant activity, lots going with programs you have installed. Don't know about the clicking, this is new on me.

Ken
Ken, ——————————————————— I ran Panda ActiveScan again and still no option or button visible for viewing or saving a report. I clicked on their HELP menu and found related discussion that explains one will see an option/button for viewing and saving a report IF infected files are detected. This seems to infer no such option is available if no infected files are found. ——————————————————— Regarding the audible clicking, I can now see I misled you. The repetitive audible occurred simultaneously with the ZA indicator showing abnormal (prolonged) internet traffic, but the audible was being generated by Windows or Internet Explorer, not ZA. The audible was the same sound I get when I open this post, or a word file or whatever. The only difference being I was getting 30-50 audibles per command (abnormal) rather than just a single audible per command (normal). It gave me the feeling that a whole lot of data was being uploaded/downloaded that I didn't want to be uploaded/downloaded. ——————————————————— I'm sensing that we are about done. If so, thanks again for your great effort. If there is something further you would like to try, please don't hesitate to contact me. ———————————————————- Regards, wdat
Well, your log looks fine  so I will leave you with some free tools to install to help keep you more secure.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
  • Tom Coyote
  • TonyKlein CastleCops
  • Grinler BleepingComputer

  • Dslreports

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
