Tons Of Spyware

I am helping a friend who is less computer savvy than I am, and is on dial-up. I have her computer on my high speed (DSL) connection to speed things up.

I have scanned with Norton, Stinger, Spybot S&D, CWShredder and Earthlink's spyblocker scanners and removed everything they found (which was a lot). I have added Zonealarm and it has "trapped" some programs from getting to the internet that I think are part of the bad actors on this computer. I have manually removed all redirected websites from the Favorites List.

I have done all this only in the main account. There is a second admin privleged (OK so I can't spell) account and I have only done virus scanning there.

Redirects are still happening but I haven't seen about:blank in a while. Looking at msconfig to see what is in startup, it appears there are at least 5 very suspicious programs. I also have not seen the compuserve dial up screen today (where something was trying to phone home). I just really don't think I have found everything but things are MUCH better than they were.

I am attaching the hijackthis log and thank you in advance for your help in rooting out ALL the pests. BTW may the programmers who write this stuff suffer all the ills they are spreading.

Download FxAgentB.exe from HERE and save it to your desktop. After downloading, double-click the FxAgentB file to run it and the program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later. Reboot when done.

Next click HERE to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1. Reboot when done.

Then click HERE to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HijackThis and post a new log here, together with the FxAgentB log.
Syggyx, thanks for the help.

FxAgentB was not found - I didn't attach the file and did not reboot.
CWShredder found nothing. Did not reboot.
AdAware - found lots - including many references to CW Search. (Note that the 3 bad running processes it found were 3 of the 5 I suspected! Also makes me wonder about the effectiveness of CWShredder.)

Went to other account, ran AdAware, found 20 more things. Rebooted.
Ran CWShredder (sorry, not in order), it found 1 reference in IE files. Rebooted.

Went back to original account, reran AdAware. Nothing new found.

Reran HJT. Log file to follow.

Some questions:
1. Is this computer clean?
2. I have had System Restore disabled. Is it safe to turn back on?

Thanks again.

I'll answer my own question - no it is not clean. I still see about:blank inbetween web pages and I see it in the HJT log. I also still see advapi32.exe in a registry key (in the HJT log) that AdAware thought it had removed. I'll run AdAware again and reboot and if things change, I'll post the new info. I await your responses.
One more update - advapi32.exe may be in the registry but the actual .exe is gone. Can I just delete the registry key? Will HJT do that? Jury still out about about:blank in HJT log. I looked at another HJT log on a new, clean system and it isn't there so must assume it isn't supposed to be. Browser isn't being hijacked, just seeing it in between pages. Using IE version 6.0.2600. Figure leaving it is just waiting for it to reappear again. Anxiously awaiting your reply. Thanks.
You still are infected with some bad hijackers and this will take a few more steps.

Please do the following,

Step #1

You have a peper infection that we need to remove

http://www.memorywatcher.com/uninst.exe

When you run the uninstaller, you MUST have an internet connection active for it to work

This Peper removal tool only works if run twice. To complete each stage of the Peper removal you need to REBOOT to clear the peper infection each time you run the tool, or the infection will remain.

Step # 2

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

REBOOT

Step #3

Please download and run Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware. Then follow the instructions in the links below to run.

Spybot Tutorial

AdAware Tutorial

Step # 4

Please do an online scan,
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log. Then we will probably nee to manually remove some items.
Well, here we go again!

Some observations: Whatever is on that machine has blocked access to this forum so I must go to another computer to access you. It is also blocking access to my webspace (ftp site) so I have resorted to a floppy to get hjt log to you.

I KNOW eber.exe is spyware, as is w?nspool.exe but nothing gets them out. When I posted the first go-round, I thought that everything was fine so when Zonealarm asked for eber.exe to go to the internet, I said OK to see what would happen. It immediately spawned 2 programs, both of which I denied internet access to, then SpybotS&D caught one of them as spyware. I have looked up both on answersthatwork.com and both have been ID'd as spyware. Why doesn't anything find this?

Uninst.exe ran very quickly. I ran then rebooted 3x since I wasn't sure it ran the 1st time. (I got better at finding it.)

CWShredder didn't find anything.
Spybot didn't either.
AdAware found APT.exe - called StatBlaster and 6 possible browser hijack things.
Housecalls didn't find anything. I rebooted and got the hjt log.

System search (Find all files and folders) doesn't work anymore - it locks up. Other search options work, if I allow (thru Zonealarm) it to access the internet, which I have never had to do before.

Teatimer (Spybot) keeps accouncing that my default home website is changing, when I didn't change anything.

Should all this scanning have been done in safe mode?
Why isn't Norton (2005 and recently updated) not finding anything?

Eber.exe is still there. It was created at the time I installed Earthlink software to use my highspeed connection, along with a bunch of other files. Pop-ups were flashing so fast at that time, it was all I could so to get to Download.com to download Spybot. I could not even access lavasoft. Everything was being hijacked.

I have thought that when I am ready to uninstall Earthlink, I would manually delete everything that came in at the same time - is that wise?

I hope that what you next recommend will permanently fix this mess - it is getting VERY old!

Thanks again

You still have a ton of stuff in your log. The reason you were hijacked immediately upon going onto the internet is that you dont have any of the service packs for XP or IE so as soon as we get a bit cleaner I will ask you to update but wait till I ask please.

Please boot to safe moe (tap f8 while bios loads) then scan with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX.

Then while still in safe mode delete these files.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\advapi32.exe<< C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\X2doaXFH.exe<< C:\windows\temp\phKxU9.exe<< C:\WINDOWS\ISAKX.exe<< C:\WINDOWS\GQIWDOYGT.exe<< C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\APt.exe<< C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?nspool.exe<< C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\eber.exe<<
Then reboot and post a new log please.
OK! I can get to the FTP site but still cannot log into this forum on the infected computer so things are better!

BTW, it has all its updates except SP2, no others were available but I didn't want to go to SP2 with all this stuff on it.

During previous scans, AdAware removed the following:
advapi32.exe
isakx.exe
gqiwdoygt.exe
apt.exe so they weren't there to remove.

I deleted the other 4.

Here's the log.

Do this fix again but do it in safe mode this time.

Then

Download the Hoster from here: » http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip
Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
Exit Program.

Post a new log please.
Just in case it was important that the programs were dowloaded in safe mode, I re-dowlnloaded all, except CWShredder since I couldn't get to the download part of the site.

No program found anything. I am posting hjt logs after all 3 programs ran, and again for after using the hoster program.

I even deleted all cookies and temp IE files, via Control Panel/Internet Options and still can't log into the forum. This isn't a big deal unless it could lead to trouble later. I know my friend will never need to go there under my name!

What's next?

Scan with hijackthis and have it fix this line. R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file) Other than that looks ok. How is it running?
Did it, rebooted. Still cannot log onto this forum, still can't make "All Files and Folders" option under SEARCH work. It stalls and must be killed. System seems a little slow bit I have put a bunch of software on it running real time, Norton, Zonealarm, Spybot, that wasn't there before. I can defrag (did it once about 4 days ago after deleting a lot of spyware). Otherwise, everything that I try to do works. Ready for SP2? WIll that cure some of these ills? OK to turn on Sys Restore? The end is in sight!!!!!!!!!!!!! And thank you again.
