Hello. This is HJT log and virus scan log of a friends computer. When i got this machine two days ago it would barely start(The "doesnt know how computers work " college student who's computer it is, is lucky it even runs after leaving it on for weeks at a time, infecting it with spyware, etc) . I've done everything I can think of to help this computer(ran and updated adaware/spy bot), did tread scan, added a virus scanner, emptied out all the temp files, cleared out any unused programs or spyware in the add/delete hardware section, etc.) It is running MUCH better. I come here as a last resort because I only know so much and want to see if there is anything else wrong. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi XXSomethingCrazy welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!

You have highjackthis running from a temp folder here:- C:\DOCUME~1\Whitney\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis[1].zip\HijackThis.exe

On your desktop screen right click, select New folder, and name it "HJT" now locate "HijackThis.exe" from your C:\DOCUME~1\Whitney\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis[1].zip\HijackThis.exe and copy and paste it into the new folder on the desktop you named "HJT"

The reason I ask for this is that HJT needs its own folder to make backups should we need them and temp folders are not the best place to keep them.
please do this and post a new HJT log.
Thanks dan
Here is the updated HJTlog. I hope you are able to read this before 11am est tomorrow because that is when I leave for Italy and I return the computer back to its owner. I am unsure if they would be able to fix the problems themself.

Hi XXSomethingCrazy

There will be work to be done to the log after this post.
I can only work on them if I get prompt replies and even then I have to go through my tutor first, that way you are getting the best advise and Instruction. as for getting it all done in the time frame you need is a tall order.
_____________

Your log shows that you have two different antivirus programs installed and running side-by-side (Norton and CA eTrust EZ Anti-Virus ).
Do not attempt to run two entirely different 'on-access' resident scanner anti-virus products simultaneously. It is simply an accident waiting to happen. Having more than one antivirus program running and "active in memory" will most definitely use far more additional resources, adversely affecting your access to files and causing overall system slowdowns.

Most of the popular anti-virus products (when running together) will "fight for control" over the user's machine, and it is this conflict that will create slowing the system speed as well as other serious compatibility problems. This can also create registry conflicts as well as causing false virus alerts - or worse, missing alerts entirely!

Additionally, many of these types of programs simply do not "play nice" or work well with each other. Unfortunately, the only thing many of these types of security applications seem to detest more than potentially harmful viruses - is other antivirus applications running simultaneously together with them. Also, not all AV programs can be installed as secondary scanners, and sometimes installing separate AV programs will cause a conflict or the program's installer will even try to 'uninstall' any other anti-virus programs during the installation.

Therefore, my advice would be to pick one (or the other) of your antivrius programs to use and then use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the one that you do not want to use anymore.
