I am disappointed…

McAffee always on (and a pain in the ram)

AdAware finds cookies…

SpyBot congratulates me for having a clean machine…

Still, the machine runs a little strange - and then stranger. Finally two runtime errors within a week made me too suspicious. So here I am…

Malwarebytes found six infected registry keys.

I don't know how to read the HJT log but there are a lot of "hosts" entries that don't look legit.

The "Before you post a log" instructions say to only post when asked, so here is the HJT log (this is after the Malwarebytes quarantine and delete (I ran the first HJT with the earlier version…

So without further adieu…

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.
You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on. Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Next:

Please download HostsXpert from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert.zip
Open HostsXpert.exe.

you have to click: ''make hosts writable'' in the top right corner, then press the ''restore MS hosts file'' option

Close program when complete.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Steps done as instructed.

Computer behavior? Slightly slow during startup… nothing noteworthy really. The HijackThis scan was slower over the last 15% of the scan, but that may be normal for it.

Here's the new scan log….

Still, the machine runs a little strange - and then stranger. Finally two runtime errors within a week made me too suspicious.

Are you still getting these issues?

As for cookies. You always have those anytime you go to the internet.

No, none of that… there were issues of McAffee turning off randomly (which was apparently the malware)

Everything seems to be running fine.

The cookies comment was about AdAware scans only finding cookies - not that having cookies was a bad thing.

As soon as this machine gets a clean bill-of-health - I want to check my wife's machine (I think it's clean)

I will then sign up for class.

This is my third time here… the first two were to help family members.. this time it was my machine. It's time for me to give back.
If you start a new topic for the others, be sure to use in the topic title: Computer number two.
That way we know you're not double posting.

Just a little cleanup

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

After the above:

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
You can remove these files and folders if listed:
C:\ComboFix
C:\QooBox
C:\combofix.txt

Also do this:

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

You can remove these files and folders if listed:
C:\ComboFix
C:\QooBox
C:\combofix.txt
C:\combofix-quarantine-files.txt

Didn't find any of those.

All other steps are complete.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
Here is the PM requesting a re-open…

http://forums.whatthetech.com/First_Log_Tr…389#entry520389

I booted up my machine tonight… McAffee Update ran… it ran a loooong time (one of the suspicious behaviors from before) Right as it finished and the "this program has been updated successfully" box popped up, suddenly McAffee turned off (another part of the previous suspicious behavior) I immediately unplugged from the wall.

Windows popped up a warning that McAffee had been turned off. The hard-drive activity light buzzed for a minute, then the warning went away and McAffee went back to "you are now protected" status again.

I immediately ran MalwareBytes and it came up clean.

I then pulled a HJT log. There are a few lines on it that don't appear to be attached to a particular software.

What are your thoughts?

You mentioned earlier in this thread to “change passwords just in case,” all passwords were changed.

I wanted to mention one other aspect of odd behavior, prior to any cleaning, twice my browser (several tabs) vanished… as if taken, not closed.

I have been extremely cautious in browsing since cleaning. The riskiest thing has been posting some items for sale on craigslist. I have even become suspicious of e-mail replies there.

As I explained in the PM (request to open), some of the odd behavior seemed to be connected to McAffee performing automatic updates.

Is this some sort of known vulnerability?

I want to change anti-virus to something less resource taxing. I had seen a thread in the self-help that had some recommended AV’s.

This is one of two machines on router… (the other came up clean)

Any advice for making it bullet proof is welcomed too.

One other note (sorry for the ramble), I see the notes everywhere here for “one anti-virus and one anti-malware” Do you recommend a specific anti-malware over another?

Again, sorry for the ramble, here is the most recent log…
