Hi..
My pc seems to have some problems - ie - running slow, not restarting properly etc. My first assumption was virus or spyware troubles, which is why I'm here posting my HJT log and asking for help. Any responses will be greatly appreciated! :)

****I completed all of the steps on the self help page.****

So far this is what I've done:
Ran my own virus scan - Norton's.
Ran SpyBot Search and Destroy as per instructions.
Ran AdAware as per self help page instructions.
Downloaded and ran AVG Anti-Spyware as per instructions on self help page.
Ran ATF Cleaner as per instructions on self help page.

**Note** Ran these programs with correct versions as per advised on self help pages, and also followed directions as to what modes to run in and also at what times to reboot, etc.

Here is my Scan Report from the AVG Anti-Spyware Program:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi -
Let me start by saying thanks for having a look at my post and offering your help. I appreciate your time and efforts. :)

I completed all of the instructions you gave me and have posted the new HJT log below.

The one item I didn't find and remove as per your instructions was the:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

It wasn't listed on the HJT scan I just did, but I think that's because, after posting my first HJT log here to the forum, I went to Run, msconfig, and unchecked Quicktime from the startup tab. I did that in an effort to stop unnecessary programs from starting with Windows (because startup is so slow for my pc). Maybe that's why it isnt showing up on my latest HJT scan?

As for how my computer is behaving at the moment…
Everything seems to be ok, meaning it's not crashing or freezing etc. But it runs slower than I think it should and startup takes a longgg time. Also, 9 times out of 10 it won't reboot or shut down on its own. It sticks at the "Windows is shutting down" screen and I have to shut it down manually which I'm assuming isn't a good thing to be doing. I do run Norton Internet Security and I guess that its a big resource hog? A lot of times at reboot or shutdown I get the "ccApp end program" message box thing….so after doing a little research, I did go into Norton's and shut off the option for it to "auto-protect floppy drive scan on shutdown".
That was just another thing I did in an effprt to try and help with the rebooting, starting, shutdown problems I've been having. Unfortunately none of these things seem to have helped as im still experiencing the same problems. One other thing I wanted to mention was that the AVG scan I did before posting my first HJT log did find that Smitfraud thing. I checked it for removal and havent found any evidence of it since on any scans or anything, but maybe AVG doesn't remove it completely? I only ask that because I see that there are other posts in the forums about it and there's mention of a "smitfraud fix", which I havent ever used.

ok, I think that's it. Sorry to ramble on :)
here's my HJT log after doing what you instructed me to do:

Before you post another HijackThis log, please turn word wrap off in Notepad.

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
sorry about the word wrap thing, my bad… ;) Question for you before I continue with the RegSeek process. It found 928 items. That seems like a lot yes? It's the greem items I have questions about. I see that you said to be extra safe I can choose only to delete the red items. But if the green items are described as 1. File or path does not exist, or 2. Obsolete entry, or 3. Obsolete start menu item, or 4. Obsolete entry….wouldn't it be a safe guess that these too can be deleted? Or maybe better for a novice (me..lol) to leave them?
all done. RegSeeker is coming up clean now and after reboot I checked things out and everything seems to be working properly so I dont think I did any damage thus far. I'm wondering if i need to turn back on the things i shut off before? Spysweeper and hidden files etc? Also…anything else to do now? Scans, fixes, post logs etc? Thanks again for yur help! :)
You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Yes you can turn Spysweeper back on.

Good Job

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.
IE Spyads
They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
ok, did all of that stuff! and during those processes when a reboot was called for, the pc actually rebooted without getting hung up..YaY! Few leftover questions/concerns: When installing the Java update, Spysweeper (which I had turned back on before the installation thinking that it (spysweeper) might to recognize and allow some components of the Java install) warned me that the Java prog was trying to install a couple of things…a browser helper and something else. I clicked allow it to do this….was that the right choice? Also….a couple of times during this fix it process when I rebooted the sysconfig utility box would pop up on restart and tell me that config was running as ummm….not modified, but I cant think of the word it said. nyway, I think it's saying that because I changed it to have quicktime shut off from starting with windows as I explained before. Is it ok to keep it that way or is there some other way I should fix it so quicktime doesnt start with windows? I checked the preferences/settings in the actual quicktime program and I couldnt find any way to keep it from not starting with windows, thats why I chose the sysconfig way of stopping it. (man…I hope you can decipher that explanation as I seem to explain what im talking about kind of the same way a dog chases its tail….lol) Also…on reboot/startup….I get a little box from Nortons saying that Nortons is turned off, but then it disappears and nortons loads up and seems to be on and working as normal. Would it be doing that as kind of a reminder to me that I have the scan flopy drive function shut off in nortons? ok, just a couple more things…sorry… Can you tell me what the NTREGOPT thing is that installed with the RegSeeker program? I see the icon on my desktop so just wondering what it is? and… I ran another HJT scan after doing all of the things in our posts here, and I see a few things im wondering about. A BHO no name thing, and Extra Button entries. Anything I should do about those? Or sometimes things are listed as such but should remain? ok I'm really hushing now. Thanks for your patience :)

Yes

would pop up on restart and tell me that config was running as

After you uncheck it and rebooting, you'll be using Selective startup.
When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup. That's how I run mine.

Log looks great. You can uninstall ERUNT, NTREGOPT and Regseeker if everything is OK unless you want to keep them and use again whenever you want to cleanup the registry. 1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. 2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed: ERUNT NTREGOPT Regseeker
