Hi jsebesty1,

We need to have you run HijackThis and provide us with a log so we can identify any malware on your computer.

Download a copy of HJTsetup.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click HJTsetup.exe to begin installation.*By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
*Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
*Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
*Continue to follow the prompts from there.
*When HJT opens, click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button.
*When HJT has finished scanning, a window entitled "hijackthis.log" will open - when you close this window the log will be saved into the hijackthis folder.
Copy and paste this log into your reply.
IndiGenus,
thanks for replying as I have passed my computer expertise in trying to get rid of this.
Here is my Hijack log
Thanks for your help. I am in the middle of a project and this is very distracting.

Hello jsebesty1,

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2F864D40-8ED1-42AD-A439-21F6F0B76150} - \

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EF41EB12-B7D5-4029-A9A7-C8963357536C} - \

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program. The program can still be used after 30 days but loses some of the features such as real time scanning.
  • Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Then click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot!
Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ALF-PID42.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try one of these.
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Now reboot, post a new HJT log, the AVG scan log, and the results from the file that you uploaded to Jotti. Please also let me know how your computer is running at this point.

Dave

Hello jsebesty1,

OK, I got your results so far. Although I don't see a log for the AVG scan. Did you run that yet? If not please do so after the next couple of steps that I've given you and post your scan log.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A87643BB-D6E1-436C-A192-1FB0693B10FC} - \
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F1ECC16D-E8D6-408F-BDB6-0B8512A84700} - \
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F39BCFFC-2053-4841-A732-381A016A4F5F} - \
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ALF-PID42.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ALF-PID42.exe

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Please reverse this process once the fix is complete.

Please delete the following file (if you're not sure how to do this then see the example in red text below):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ALF-PID42.exe<–File

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\filetogo.bye
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Double click on Local Disc (C:)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Right click on filetogo.bye and from the menu that appears, click on 'Delete'

Run the AVG scan if you haven't already and post your scan results back here.

Now reboot and post a new HJT log for review. Please also let me know how things are running now.

Regards,
Dave
Dave,
Everything is now back to normal. I already deleted the ALF file and all no names on Hijack this.
Ran AVG full scan which came back showing NO virsus or threats.
I have a question. I ran a Norton file scan of the Alf-Pid42 and it showed nothing.
I use Norton system works and had to use Hijack this 2 years ago. with your help quiding me to these sites and using Pacman etc I understand more.
Apparantly, that ALF file was a gatway to the other trojan horses. Should I use both Norton and AVG???
Once again, I truly appreciate your help and will be making a donation to Toms site.
Regards,
Jim

Hi jsebesty1,

Glad to hear that things are running better. As far as Norton not seeing that file as bad, no one AV product is 100% effective. Certainly some are better than others and I would consider Norton to be a good product. One thing you DO NOT want to do is run two Anti-Virus programs at the same time. They can interfere with one another and use excessive system resources. It does appear you have installed AVG free anti-virus. You can keep it on your computer but only have either Norton or AVG running real time protection at a time. The same goes for firewalls in regards to this.
You can run mulitple Anti-Spyware utilities most of the time without any problems. Below I have listed what I use for my computers with no conflict or resource issues. They provide an reasonable and effective security solution for a home hased computer.

Please also do the following to prevent re-infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (12.6 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
Use ATF Cleaner to remove all temp files, cookies, cache, ect…
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

In addition to running one Anti-Virus program and one firewall I recommend the following.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…mp;#entry257163

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Regards,
Dave
Dave, One last problem AVG is screwing up my email. It runs a scan and some how I cannot connect How do I put AVG in a manual start mode only?? I cant figure it out. thanks, Jim
Hi Jim,
Try this:
Click Start -> Run…
Type in services.msc and click OK
Right click on AVG email scanner and select stop. Now try to get your email.
If this works then open up services again and right click on AVG email scanner. Click Properties and change startup type to manual.

Let me know how this works.

Dave
I have been following this thread and have run avg. AVG tells me there are no threats. I am still getting the popups.
