Hello! Was surfing the net with my other puter, and it suddenly lagged. cpu went to 100% and everything stopped. This has happened before, and turning it physically off/on has put it back on track. Not this time. Not able to start again in safe mode or last functioning startup. What is going on, cant acsess it at all!!!!!!! Any help would be much appriciated. PLS HELP! Kris 42
Hi,
Sorry to hear of the problem with your computer.
It looks as though you have a corrupt registry, however it would be helpful if you could provide us with your best English translation of the exact error messages you are getting.

1 Do you have a back up of your registry made before this problem started?
2 Do you have a system Restore Point set up before this problem started?
3 Do you have an "Image" of your system partition, (by Ghost, Drive Image, Paragon, Acronis or similar?
4 Do you have all your data and important information, files etc. backed up?
5 Is your Windows XP operating system an "OEM" version?

In the meantime Microsoft have some useful information on "How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting" it may be found at the following location.

Ok i`ll try translating as best i can, "STOP : c0000218 (Error in registryfile) Registry can`t load structure (F11) \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or the log or it`s alternative. It`s either damaged, missing or not possible to write to. Starting dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump finished. Contact support if you need more help. 1. No 2. Yes, somewhere in there 3. No 4. 20 gigs of pctures on my ext hdd 5. Yes. (os installed when i bought it) I`m not able to acess at all. It gave an option of using last functioning startup point, which also led to above mentioned message. It wont boot with windows in any way. Wonder what can cause this problem. Maby i`ll take it back where i bought it, and see if they can help.
Hi, Thanks for the translation, Yes it looks like you have a corrupt registry. If your machine is under warranty/guarantee/service agreement (or you have a friendly relationship with the firm from where you got your computer) then it's probably best to take it back to them and ask them to take a look. If you have a Windows XP installation disc (or can beg or borrow one from a chum) then it might be worth booting your machine from the CD. and trying a "Repair" installation, which is (usually!) non destructive in terms of data. There are lots of detailed instructions available on the Web on how to do the "repair installation" but if you want further information, post back and I will be able to suggest some sites that provide authoritative information. Good luck Regards paws
Hello again. I got my os disck that came with my laptop. booted from dvd-rom. Got 2 options: - install windows xp, press enter - repair a windows xp- installation, through the restore-console, press E.(trnsl. from No) Tried the repair and got to the c:\windows prompt, and i`m not sure what to do from there. If Paws, or anyone could direct me to a helpful site it would be much appriciated. Regards Kris42
Hi, Well done on getting into the Restore console. I suggest you try the following: At the C:\WINDOWS prompt type: chkdsk c: /p /r ((please note the spaces which are essential) Be prepared to wait as this repair process could take several hours, when it has finished (if successful) at the prompt type: fixboot then at the prompt: Y and press the Enter/Return Key. When it has finished try to Reboot. Good luck! Regards paws
tks Paws. tried chckdsk c: /p /r. and got following (trnsl from norw.): "the volume seems to contain one or several irreperable problems". By pressing F10 on startup i entered the BIOS setup utility, ran a HDD self-test which passed questions: 1. Anything else I can try through the restore console? 2. If i "reinstall xp", without reformating, would it damage my data, or make it inacsessable? Regards Kris42
Hi, Sorry to hear you have the dreaded " irreperable problems" This is normally bad news. You can try a repair on top, non destructive reinstall of windows and this, hopefully, will leave your data intact (but alas, no guarantees!) If you have any important files, data, that you have not already backed up/copied, then it's now time to do this before you try the reinstall, I usually recommend taking out the hard drive and if an IDE change jumper to "Slave" and install it in another computer (use the middle connector on the IDE cable) and then copy off anything that you need, especially drivers. You can do a search for drivers and find a lot of them by using *.inf in the seach field. In any event make sure you have your drivers for your modem as you will need this for the internet! Two other thoughts: 1 Do you have a copy of Spinrite? Have a look at www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm 2 Do you have a copy of UBCD? Have a look at www.ultimatebootcd.com/ 3 Can you boot to a Linux live distro and are you confident at working in Linux? Good luck Regards paws
Tks alot for all help and guidence so far. :) If I wasn`t before, now i`m really way out of my league. Had a chat with a friend of mine who works with comp.maintanance, and he will help me to back up my files. He talked about the same things you do(slave, changing jumpers etc.) He was quite confident about this. Then i think a reformat, and reinstall would be good. 1. no, i will. 2. same as 1 3. Not at all familiar with linux. Tks again Paws. And on the bright side, i learn from you guys, and maby also from my own f… ups. Regards Kris42
