my computer has a DVD player, and if i try and watch a DVD i get background sound loud, but no vocals, unless it is up so loud to deafen the house. any idea how to change this? sound works ok on other applications, but is messed up for both interactual player and realplayer
What's the difference between "background noise" and "vocals"? I've got a simple Right Left speaker setup so both speakers essential play it all. I suppose you could have a nice sound blaster or Audigy system that has distinct separation of "tracts" for stereo/surround sound type experience? 3, 5, or 7 speaker setup? If you do, maybe one of the speakers is dead or turned down to low, or wire not correctly plugged in?
its a 5 speaker set, all controlled from one volume switch, the sound comes and goes… by background i mean if watching a movie…i can hear the crickets, the squeeks and that kinda noise….but not the vocal noise
Check the connectors for each speaker. Two are possibly responsible for vocals. Do you have the ability to reduce the total number of speakers, such that you have a Right - Left setup? Maybe even skuttle the 5 speaker array and go back to the two speaker system that may have been standard with your machine. I realize you are stating that other media and media playing utilities work fine and you hear what seems like the whole range of the media with those other utilities. Still, two speakers that are responsible for "vocal/dialogue" in DVD could be cutting out due to connector problems. I realize you will be wanting your full system to perform correctly, and the above is simply to see if you have a hardware connector problem. _________________________________ What have you found in Device Manager?
What is your sound card? Audigy? Go to your Device Manager: Right-Click on My Computer - Select - Properties - Hardware - Click on Device Manager (button) In the Device Manager list that is now displayed, please click on "Sound, video and game controllers" Are there any yellow or red warnings, or is there any blue text?
Often, "sound problems" are caused by:

Problem with broken wires
Problems with connector plugs not being completely plugged in
Sound Card "Driver" software corruption.

Look around in your Options and Tools settings:
Settings in Interactual DVD playback "Tools" setting for number of speakers 2, 4, 6
Mono, Stereo, Dolby, 3DAudio
Vocal Options: No Vocals, Right Vocal, Left Vocal, Both Vocal, Melody

Be sure you have: Dolby Pro Logic checkmarked for "Always Enable"

Sometimes in InterActual DVD playback program….
some options in the Options Menu may not appear or may appear "greyed out"

Make sure that your Windows Operating System has all the latest Critical Updates and Patches

Some DVD recordings from Warner Brothers Home Video have a "compatibility" problem with "interactual"

Microsoft has made a "patch" downloadable with the regular MS updates.
Here's the MS help article about downloading updates and patches, if you need it:

Take it slow and explore each of the above recommendations.
Post back with specific questions as they arise.

Start by Playing a DVD.
Move close-up to each of your speakers, so you can hear if it is actually kicking out any sound.
If one or more Speaker does not seem to be broadcasting sound, check the wires and connectors to that/those speaker(s)

Keep us posted with your progress.

Best Regards
