Hello Mouse Potato,

It is looking good. Kapersky shows infected items that are quarantined which are no threat, and infected _restore files.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

This will clear those infected _restore files found in the Kapersky log.
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Let's run Kapersky again and check to make sure just the quarantined items show.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and the Kapersky results.
Cheers Susan,

I am still experiencing the freezing problem.
I don't see anything wrong now. Let's try this.

PCPitStop

Please register (it's free, don't worry) with PCPitStop and run the full tests here.
When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Click "Share these results with TechExpress" on the left-hand side. Then copy the URL provided and post (reply) with it here for me.
Good! :) I'll keep my fingers crossed too! Another thing you can do is go back to PCPitstop and in the left margin there is a driver scan test. You can run it and find out if you have drivers that need updating.

Here are some recommendations to help prevent malware infections.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Thanks Susan,

I have all the software listed above set to update automatically, should I also be checking manually for updates too?

I have done the driver check and the results are here:

Driver check.

I had a look on the NVIDIA website but I can't find the latest driver for the GeForce FX 5200 in the options, do you know where I can find this?

(Edit: I have found one here, is it safe to download it from this site and do I need to uninstall the current driver before I add the new one?)

I also left the PC running the defrag over night and it hasn't frozen, there was no way it would have lasted over night before. Thank you.

Best regards,

Phil
I don't know how to automatically check for driver updates. I just know from my experience that out-of-date drivers can cause problems. And one may not think as that as a cause for problems but thinks of malware first.

I am afraid that I may not be able to help you much with resolving your driver problems. Sometimes the manufacturer's website would contain information about drivers, however, I did not find anything for Time Computers.

I would suggest that you post here:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=83

Here is another website which may also help:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000644.htm

I am sorry that I am referring you elsewhere but I do not feel that I can help you in a timely and efficient manner now. I have had problems with drivers in the past.

Susan
