Hello Ed,

Welcome to Tom Coyote

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Lets first try to uninstall C:\Program Files\Safety Bar if it will let you via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Open up HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these and click on Fix Checked.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {a43385f0-7113-496d-96d7-b9b550e3fcca} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ixt0.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Safety Bar - {052b12f7-86fa-4921-8482-26c42316b522} - C:\Program Files\Safety Bar\SafetyBar.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winztq32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winztq32.dll

Reboot into Safemode.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Look for and delete the following files and folders in Red

C:\Program Files\Safety Bar
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ixt0.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winztq32.dll

Reboot normally and lets run a system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Post a new HJT log and let me know if any of the above helped.
This got rid of the tool bar in Explorer and I got my home page back. I could not delete C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winztq32.dll even in safe mode. Here is my new Hijackthis log.
Thanks
Ed Varner

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vunerable. Update your Java:

    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 and press the Download' button. On the new web page, click the Accept License Agreement' button.
