lwinsure – Thanks for sending your HijackThis log. You have several malware infections, including Wintools and Twain-Tech.

Go ahead and print these instructions, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files". Open Windows Explorer and go to "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" then click on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" option, and un-check "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files" options. Then click the "Apply To All Folders" button.

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

2 – Click on "Start" => "Control Panel" => "Administrative Tools" => "Services". Look for a service called "Wintools for IE Service" => Double-click it to open, then click on the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled. Do not worry if the service is not listed.

3 – Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for any of the following: "WtoolsA.exe", "WToolsS.exe" and "WSup.exe". If you find any of the files, click on them, and then click End Process. Exit the Task Manager when done.

4 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

twain-tech
TV Media
TV Media Display
MS T-Media Display

Web Search Toolbar
Win-Tools Easy Installer (may be multiples)
any other Wintools entry you see

5 – Now, open a command prompt by clicking on "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" and click on "OK". At the prompt, type regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" (Quotation marks must be typed in on the preceeding command) then press . Type exit to close the command prompt window.

6 – Run HijackThis, from its new location, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

7 – While still in safe mofe, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\Program Files\TV Media\TvmBho.dll <–this file (may already be gone)

C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll <–this file (may already be gone)
C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll <–this file (may already be gone)

C:\WINDOWS\ylsjvfd.exe <–this file
C:\WINDOWS\ejmnojf..exe <–this file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\basolss.exe <–this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ircrclnr.exe <–this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rmetggt.exe <–this file

C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\ <– this folder
C:\Program Files\Toolbar\ <– this folder
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\ <– this folder

8 – Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

9 – And, to prevent any remnants of the problems from hiding out in your restore files, please disable Windows System Restore, then reboot, then re-enable Windows System Restore by following the instructions at: "How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore"

Now let's take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai

lwinsure – Awesome work on Wintools and the other infections :) Very nice work!

I see only a single virus remaining so let's go ahead and snuff that out.

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

2 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

3 – While still in safe mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe <– this file

4 – Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

Now, reboot normally and run the Housecall On-Line Virus Scan from Trend Micro, and clean any problems found.

Let's take a (hopefully) final look at your system now. Send me a logfile…you know the drill :)

Thanks
daveai
Hi! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. We were shorthanded at work yesterday and I didn't have time until today. Anyway, here is the new log. Let me know if there is anything else I need to do.

Also, I ran Spybot and deleted all the problems and then to Trend Micro and ran their virus scan and deleted any problems. Now, when I run Norton, I get the following threats:

1FF.tmp (Adware.winshow)
B9B.tmp (Adware.winshow)
backup-20040825-133539-966.dll (Adware.Binet)
mxTarget.dll (Adware.Binet) - I have 18 listings
uninstaller.exe (Spyware.Apropos)

I don't understand why that darn mxTarget.dll keeps showing up. :rant2: Let me know what you think.

Thanks!!

lwinsure

lwinsure – Thanks for the response.

Well, your logfile is clean :) A key question is: How is the system running? Any problems?

My thoughts about your Norton resuolts:

1 – I searched them on Symantec's site and all are cleaned by updating the definitions (live update) and then running a scan with thier product. I assume you've done that, so…

2 – Reviewing our thread, another step we might take is to manually clean the TEMP files system-wide (all user profiles). The "cleanmgr" approach we have been using does a good job on the single user running at the time, which often is all it takes.

Here's how to do it:

Use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

3 – and, I'd also recommend a scan with AdAware SE if you haven't done that, and trying the Panda online scan…it can't hurt :)

General scans to give your system a "good scrubbing". Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

And, finally, these are the general suggestions I offer keep one's computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – Consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
daveai
Hi again! I am a happy camper. :P I followed your instructions to the letter and re-ran all my scans and came up clean. Even with Norton….finally. I do have a firewall set up….now. I did it a few days ago. I read a couple of the articles you listed. I pretty much know how I got infected. I'm not positive, but I was having trouble printing off pages from a company website and contacted customer service and they had me change some internet settings. I know better than to mess with the settings and I still can't believe I did it. I started having trouble after that. A couple days later I got hit with a Trojan Horse called Backdoor.Prosiak. I was able to remove it, but my computer just wasn't the same. That is when I decided to check out Hijack This and I am so glad I did. I already had Spybot S & D on my computer, but I wasn't faithful in running it. I installed Adaware SE, but not until after I started having problems. There was a show on tv last night and they mentioned Panda. I will definitely check that out now that you also recommended it. And I also had TrendMicro Housecall bookmarked, but I wasn't faithful about running it either. I put a lot of faith into Norton and update on a daily basis, but I guess sometimes things happen. I am definitely going to check out the other three programs that you recommended. I sure am breathing a sigh of relief right now that it's over….for now. I know it will happen again, but I plan on being better prepared so hopefully it doesn't happen again. I've already printed off all the material you recommended and put it in a binder for safe keeping. You have know idea how much I appreciate the help you have given me. (big hug) ;) Thanks again for your help. It really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Take care!! :wavey:
