I have avoided using MSIE until the recent upgrade, but decided to try it. As soon as I tried it, got an AOL home page and a gmbling window. I have run several spyware apps to eleimiate it. Maybe it's gone for now, I don't know. Will appreciat any tips.
This is Alan David's log.

I did a bit of my own homework and found that a whole bunch of people have the same problem: NSIS Media, Party Poker. No one seems to know for sure how they got it, or so far exactly the best way to get rid of it. I thought I was running so much antivirus/anti spyware that it takes more memory than many computers even have. These people must be really smart!

Welcome to Tom Coyote Sorry for the delay in responding. We are most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Whatever you did you did fine because your HJT log looks ok  People need to stay out of those gambling sites, file sharing , there bad news.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vunerable. Update your Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment)

It should have an icon next to it:

    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 and press the Download' button. On the new web page, click the Accept License Agreement' button.
Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform
area just below the Accept button.

Here are some recommendations to keep your system secure.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

KEN: I appreciate your advice and have done the things you advised. However, I feel it would be irresponsible of me not to point out that my log was run and posted BEFORE I took the steps to remedy the situation, and I never visit gambling or gaming sites. I am very suprised that no one else on this forum has had the same problem… NSIS Media, because discussion of it is easy to find with Google. Since I have so much anti-spyware and firewall stuff running I would love to know how those devils beat the system and HIJACK THIS didn't show it either. There may be a couple of things contributing to my confusion: 1) I may not be searching the forum well enough, or 2) I may be expecting more than I should of the HT program in terms of it showing that particular problem. In any case, it's really great to be able to get this kind of help and advice. I appreciate it.
Alan Do this…go to where you have HJT currently and right click on the HJT Icon and rename it to Analyze.exe, run the scan and post a new log. The reason for this is that some infections are being written to avoid detection by HJT. I myself have held off on IE7 as I have heard there are still problems with it. Ken :D
OK… did that. Here is a new log. Still have not had reccurance of the NSIS Media popunder window problem.

Another question: I had to buy additional RAM just to use Windows Live One Care. Am I running too much antispyware/antivirus? Any other suggestions as to trimming down the memory load?

Alan

Alan,

I see one questionable entry on your log. Do you know what it is?? If you don't, remove it with HJT and then delete this entire folder. You will have to have windows enabled to show all files and folders and boot to safemoce to delete it.

Ken :D
Ken, I do know what that is. I got it from http://inspectorgadgets.ourtoolbar.com/ base on something I saw in "Tech Republic": http://software.techrepublic.com.com/downl…mp;docid=262754

It has a whole lot of features that are primarily designed as internet safety and anti-spy/anti-virus tools. It's also available on CNET and ZDnet
I have not found any negative comments about it, so I think it should be OK to keep unless I start having some weird activity going on. Thanks for your input, though, and I will appreciate your comments on the subjects you mentioned.–Alan
OK Alan, then as long as you know what it is then it would be safe to keep, the rest of your log looks fine

As far as programs and ram, no matter what it tells you with XP you should have 512 to run well. Never have more than one Anti Virus program running on your system. You should pick at least 2 or 3 good Anti Spyware programs, you really don't need more than that. AVG Anti Spyware is yours to keep after the trial, you can still check for updates, run scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background guard feature.

Stay away from Online Gambling sites, File Sharing programs like Limewire, Kazaa and sites like those.
