G'day,
I installed Norton Anti-Virus 2006 and it seems to have disabled my Windows XP Windows Security Center. Instead of noting that I am running Norton AV, as it did when I was running Norton 2005, I get this message at the top of the Windows Security Center status pane: "Windows Security Center currently unavailable because Security Center service has not started or was stopped."
During the installation process, I never authorized Norton AV to disable SP2 or Windows Security Center. The Windows Security Center status pane indicates that the Windows firewall is on, but it has that note about Security Service Center service being stopped.
Should I do anything? Norton website says the two programs are compatible.
Norton online chat help line was useless. One idiot told me to just reinstall Windows XP. He didn't want to deal with the problem.
Thanks for any help you may give.

Thanks very much. That post was helpful in a general way, but since I don't have OneCare I couldn't resolve the compatability problem. But thanks anyway. Ozyank
Which version of Spybot do you have?….is it the latest 1.4, and is it Spybot that gives the alert?
also these entries in your log suggest that you also have Nortons Firewall.

(spbbcsvc.exe is a part of the Symantec Internet security suite)

O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
(symlcsvc.exe is an application which belongs to Norton's Internet Security Suite, and provides additional security features. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.)

Also you could try this:

Try resetting the start of Windows Security Center to automatic as follows:
Click Start then Run.
Type "Services.msc" (no quotes) in the Open block.
Click OK.
When the Services dialog opens, scroll down in the right pane and locate the "Security Center" entry in the list.
Double click on the entry.
In the Security Center Properties (Local Computer) dialog set the "Startup type" to "Automatic".
Click Apply.
If the "Service status" is Stopped, click Start. If Security Center was stopped and you have to start it, note any messages that you get besides the following pop-up with a progress bar:
Windows is attempting to start the following service on Local Computer
Security Center
After Windows Security Center starts, click OK.
Exit from the Services dialog.
Juliet, thanks so much for your helpful postings. I really appreciate it. Replying to your questions, I'm running Spybot 1.3. It originally alerting me of the change Norton Anti-Virus 2006 made to Windows Security Center when I installed Norton, but now the only clert is the message in the Windows Secutity Center status window saying it (the security center) has been stopped. I tried resetting the start of Windows Security Center via Services. msc as you suggested and got the following error message: Error 123: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." There is no question in my mind that Norton turned off my Windows Security Center. I just don't know how to turn it on again, or even if it is necessary to do so. Thanks again, Ozyank
Do you have Norton Internet Security?
If you do it already has an established Firewall within the program,
I found a Microsoft link that suggests registry edits…..If you chose to do this please do exactly as directed.
Error Message: Error 123: The Filename, Directory Name, or Volume Label Syntax Is Incorrect

You should also uninstall Spybot version 1.3 and upgrade to version 1.4

Install and Update SpyBot Search&Destroy Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
Tutorial
Thanks yet again. No, I didn't buy Norton Internet Security, just 2006 Norton Anti-Virus. I'll check out the Microsoft link but probably won't change registry because it's scary doing that at my level of skills. I just downloaded and installed Spybot 1.4. Thanks
You should not rely on just the Windows XP firewall when there are firewalls that are free for personal use that are better, the Windows XP firewall only checks incoming data.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Good known free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or Outpost
